Air traffic alert after Alaska volcano spews ash cloud (Reuters)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) ? A remote volcano in Alaska's Aleutian Islands erupted violently early on Thursday, spouting an ash cloud 15,000 feet into the sky and prompting an air-traffic alert, scientists said.

The Cleveland Volcano, located on an uninhabited island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage, had been oozing lava and gas since July.

Ash from the 5,676-foot volcano is considered potentially dangerous to aircraft because Cleveland's peak lies directly below commercial flight paths between Asia and North America.

Additional explosions producing larger ash clouds are possible and could come without warning, the observatory said.

Jet engines are vulnerable to damage and sudden failure if they suck in gritty volcanic dust.

A KLM airliner abruptly dropped more than 14,000 feet when it flew through ash belched into the atmosphere from an eruption of the Mount Redoubt volcano, just west of Cook Inlet, in 1989. The badly damaged jet landed in Anchorage.

Thursday's explosion, captured by satellite imagery, likely stemmed from a gradual buildup of pressure during months of intermittent low-level eruptions, said Dave Schneider, a geophysicist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The last significant eruption at Cleveland was in 2001, when the volcano unleashed three explosions that spewed ash as high as 39,000 feet, spilled a stream of lava from the summit crater and unleashed an avalanche of molten rock, according to the observatory. Cleveland also erupted in 2009, with smaller ash emissions.

The volcano encompasses about half the uninhabited Chuginadak Island. The nearest human settlement is Nikolski, a tiny Aleut village located about 45 miles to the east.

Although Cleveland is among the most active of Alaska's roughly 90 volcanoes, no seismic equipment or cameras are set up there for continuous monitoring because of its remote location. Scientists keep tabs with satellite data, witness reports and video from mariners and pilots in the area.

Interference with air travel is the most immediate risk posed by Alaskan volcanoes. But they are not alone.

An ash cloud from a Chilean volcano grounded flights across eastern and southern Australia in June. The eruption of an Icelandic volcano in 2010 led to 100,000 canceled flights, hampering the air travel of some 10 million people.

Cleveland is the only Alaska volcano blamed in an eruption-caused human death in recorded history. A U.S. soldier who was stationed on Chuginadak during World War Two disappeared during an eruption and was presumed killed.

Ross Pearson outlasts Junior Assuncao for UFC 141 decision

Ross Pearson outlasts Junior Assuncao for UFC 141 decision

In his first fight at featherweight, Ross Pearson survived Junior Assuncao's jiu-jitsu to take a decision at UFC 141 in Las Vegas on Saturday. The winner of season nine of "The Ultimate Fighter" took the bout 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 on the judges cards.

Assuncao took Pearson down early in the first round, then got his back before Pearson escaped. Assuncao moved well as Pearson stalked him around the cage. Halfway through the round, Assuncao tried for another takedown, but was unsuccessful. As the round neared its end, Pearson was able to land a few punches and kicks, but Assuncao's movement kept him from landing anything substantial.

In the second round, Assuncao continued to work for a takedown but took plenty of punishment for it. Pearson figured out Assuncao's movement and landed a jab that shook Assuncao. He used that to move into the clinch and land short strikes. Assuncao returned to the takedown attempt, but Pearson held him off.

Assuncao started the third round out well, catching Pearson with a jab and taking him down. Assuncao moved to Pearson's back, but couldn't do anything with the position as Pearson maneuvered back to his feet. For the rest of the round, Pearson moved forward and landed damaging shots to Assuncao.

After winning TUF, Pearson won two fights before losing bouts to Cole Miller and Edson Barboza. This was his first time dropping down to 145 lbs.

UN approves lower budget of $5.15 billion (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The General Assembly has approved a budget of $5.15 billion to cover the United Nations' regular operations in 2012-2013, cutting its two-year budget for the first time in 13 years by 5 percent.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who proposed a 3.2 percent budget cut in October, thanked the 193-member world body for agreeing to "cut fat" at a time when governments and people everywhere are struggling because of global financial difficulties.

He said he would instruct all managers to find new ways "to do more and better with less."

U.S. deputy ambassador Joseph Torsella called the budget agreement "historic," saying it was the first time since 1998 and only the second time in the last 50 years that the U.N. regular budget declined from the previous budget's actual expenses. The U.N. spent $5.41 billion in 2010-2011.

The United States pays 22 percent of the U.N.'s administrative budget, and Torsella said the new budget "saves the American taxpayers millions of dollars and sets the United Nations on the path of real fiscal discipline and continued reform."

Over the last 20 years, he said, the U.N.'s two-year budget increased by an average of 5 percent which means the new budget represents savings to American taxpayers of as much as $100 million.

U.N. peacekeeping operations are funded separately.

The regular operating budget was adopted Saturday after an all-night session.

General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser praised the "robust and constructive engagement" of all delegations in reaching consensus on a financial plan, saying the negotiating process had been "particularly challenging this year in the wake of global financial challenges."

Ban proposed a series of changes to improve the U.N.'s efficiency, a reduction of 44 staff posts, and cost-cutting for travel, consultants, general operating expenses, supplies, materials and equipment.

Torsella said the new budget advances U.N. reforms by providing additional resources for the U.N.'s watchdog, the Office of Internal Oversight Services, agreeing to webcast all U.N. formal committee meetings, and increasing cooperation among U.N. services such as interpretation and translation.

Apple Posts iTunes Match Video Walkthrough, FAQ, Setup Guide

Apple has posted a dedicated web site to iTunes Match, the company?s annual $25 service, to provide clarification on some of the most important aspects surrounding the product, including setup, availability, and usage.

?With iTunes in the Cloud, the music you buy from the iTunes Store automatically appears on all your devices,? Apple says on the new site.

?And for music you haven?t purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. iTunes Match is built right into iTunes on your computer and the Music app on your iOS devices. It lets you store your entire collection in iCloud, even music you?ve imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than iTunes,? the Mac maker adds.

?When it?s in iCloud, it?s available on all your devices. So you can enjoy all your music anywhere, anytime ? on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, or Apple TV.?

Apple then details the song matching and uploading process, and offers a setup guide, a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ), and a walkthrough video.

For example, the first question answered in the FAQ is ?Who can use iTunes Match??

Following the international rollout earlier this month, ?Anyone with an Apple ID in the U.S and select other countries can use iTunes Match,? Apple says.

The company then outlines the system requirements, which include iTunes 10.5.1 or later on Mac or PC, and iOS 5.0.1 or later on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), or iPad.

Stuff like which music formats can iTunes Match handle, and how many devices can iTunes Match support, is also explained.

Finally, there?s a blue button at the bottom of the page that says ?Subscribe to iTunes Match?. The link takes you to the setup page in iTunes, but only if your country is supported.

Anyone Else Having Problems With Apple's iMessage?

When Apple announced its latest operating system upgrade a few months ago, there was one feature I was excited about:

iMessage.

This was the iPhone-to-iPhone texting tool that would allow iPhone owners to circumvent the ridiculous fees the carriers charge for text messages.

Instead, iPhone owners would be able to text each other via iMessage for free, no matter how many texts they sent.

iMessage sounded cool, but I didn't bother to upgrade my iPhone's OS immediately, so I forgot about it. Then, last week I finally upgraded--after spilling a cup of tea in my previous MacBook (long story) and deciding it was time to get started with iCloud.

Anyway, after I upgraded, I found I was automatically using iMessage when texting with folks who had iPhones.

And, initially, it appeared to work fine. It was just like texting, except with some blue text-blurb windows instead of the regular green.

But then, suddenly, I found that I was in the dog house at home over having not done something I was supposed to have done, even though I didn't know that I had been supposed to do it. And when I inquired about that--about how I was supposed to have known--I learned that I was supposed to have known because of the text message I had been sent. And when I protested that I had never gotten a text telling me what I was supposed to have known, I got the look that said "Like hell you didn't get that text."

So I checked my iPhone again. And I really hadn't gotten that text. And I didn't get that text until the next day, when it showed up as though it had just been sent.

And then, today, I got a repeat iMessage from the same person four times in rapid succession.

So it seems like iMessage was seriously on the fritz.

I asked my Twitter followers whether they were having any problems with iMessage. Of those who responded, about half said that they had been having similar problems. The other half said everything was perfect.

So, based on this small sample, it seems like Apple's having some glitches with its carrier-circumventing texting-killer iMessage.

Anyone else seeing this?

Investing in awesomeness | sacha chua :: living an awesome life

I?ve been thinking of what I want to learn more about when it comes to investing.

I?ve read stacks and stacks of personal finance books. I enjoy reading them, even though many books repeat the same uncontroversial advice. My ledger of income, expenses, and investments goes back to 2005, when I moved to Canada and started managing my own finances. We might never be absurdly wealthy, but if we continue to be frugal and hard-working, I think we?ll enjoy more flexibility and less stress than most people have.

2011 was a good year, despite the fluctuations in the stock market. Although it was occasionally discouraging to see my carefully-saved index funds dip below their book price, I kept plugging away. I figure that if businesses have managed to do fine despite past events like the Great Depression, things will be okay. If the rules of the game have changed and the stock markets no longer perform the way they used to, well, we?ll have bigger problems than the lack of a decent return on investment.

Investment-wise, we?re on a good path. I don?t have the time or interest to pick individual stocks, and I?m comfortable with a boring balanced portfolio made up of index funds and skewed towards equities. From here on, it?s more about time and persistence than sophistication.

What I?m curious about is this: what?s worth investing time and money in? What does investing in awesomeness look like?

I?m not the kind of person who chases bucket-list experiences in order to check off things I?d like to have done. I?ve tried it and it didn?t sit well with me. I like simple things and everyday activities. Fortunately, W- does too.

I thought about resuming my experiments with outsourcing. I don?t mind my chores that much, though. I?d rather save the time (money is time, after all) so that I can give myself a focused year instead of spending it on an hour here, an hour there that can be so easily absorbed into distractions of everyday life. I might pick up the experiment again someday, when I run into something that I don?t want to limit by my skills. We?ll see.

So here?s what I?m saving up for and investing in instead:

  • Experimenting and learning
    • Tools for working better
    • Trying a new community-supported agriculture program, because we can
  • Streamlining life
    • Multiple sets of socks that are all the same, to reduce the need for matching
    • Decluttering and the freedom to ignore sunk costs
    • Simplification and fewer frustrating things
  • A year-long sabbatical in 2014, during which I plan to focus on writing and development

It?s about striking a balance between long-term goals and shorter-term ones. I don?t want to postpone enjoyment until I?m 65 or 70. I want to test ideas earlier than later, so that I can tweak and adjust.

I?m a little envious of other people who are exploring the worlds of freelancing, entrepreneurship, or lifestyle design. Envy being mostly useless, I shift that energy into analyzing my decisions and testing some of my assumptions. It looks like IBM will still provide the best stability as I build up other experiments. I?ll continue with that for now, and I?ll trust that this preparation will give me more opportunities for interestingness over the next few years. In the meantime, I guard my evenings, weekends, and holidays more closely from the temptations of work. These are excellent times to test ideas for the next step, and they shouldn?t be wasted.

What do I want to learn about investing? I want to learn how to better test my assumptions about life. I want to learn about small and simple experiments that have good ROI for knowledge. I want to learn how to make better choices. I want to get even better at ignoring what the world tells me I should want in favour of figuring out what I truly need.

Today I read a book called I Moved Your Cheese. It reminded me of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, another book I enjoyed. In I Moved Your Cheese, the author pointed out that even if you?ve absorbed the lessons from Who Moved My Cheese? on not letting change frustrate you, you?re still chasing after cheese. I don?t want to chase after money, or time, or even happiness. (The odd thing about happiness is that once you pursue it, you can?t have it.) I want to create space for interestingness and discovery.

So we?re investing in wanting less and needing less, in enjoying life more, and in experimenting with making life better. I?d love to hear about your experiences along these lines!

(AP) ? Syria's top opposition leader called on the Arab League Sunday to bring the U.N. into the effort to stop the regime's bloody crackdown on dissent as security forces pressed ahead with raids and arrests and killed at least seven more people.

Burhan Ghalioun, the Paris-based leader of the Syrian National Council, made the plea as Arab League officials were setting up teams of foreign monitors as part of their plan aimed at ending nine months of turmoil that the U.N. says has killed more than 5,000 people.

Opposition groups say the Arab League is not strong enough to resolve the crisis, which is escalating beyond mass demonstrations into armed clashes between military defectors and security forces and a double suicide bombing that shook Damascus on Friday.

"I call upon the Arab League to ask the Security Council to adopt its plan in order to increase possibilities of its success and avoid giving the regime an opportunity not to carry out its obligations," Ghalioun said in a televised speech marking Christmas. The opposition council "holds the international community to its responsibilities and asks them to use all available means to put an end to the tragedies experienced by the Syrian people," he added.

"The barbaric massacre must stop now," Ghalioun said.

The Arab League has begun sending observers into Syria to monitor compliance with its plan to end to the crackdown on political opponents. President Bashar Assad agreed to the League plan only after it warned that it could turn to the U.N. Security Council to help stop the violence.

The plan requires the government to remove its security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country.

The opposition has accused Assad of agreeing to the plan only to buy time and forestall more international sanctions and condemnation.

Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, head of the Arab League observer team, traveled to Damascus late Saturday after meeting with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby to discuss arrangements of the mission. More monitors are expected to arrive Monday.

On Sunday, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist groups said troops shelled the town of Juraithi in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, killing one person. They added that security forces killed three others in the village of Kouriyeh, also in Deir el-Zour.

The groups also reported that parts of the restive central city of Homs was bombed Saturday, killing at least three people and wounding dozens.

The two groups also blamed the regime for the assassination of a former member of Assad's ruling Baath party in Homs Ghazi Zoaib and his wife Saturday night. The groups said Zoaib had recently expressed support of the opposition.

The Syrian government has long contended that the turmoil in Syria this year is not an uprising by reform-seekers but the work of terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs.

Syria blamed al-Qaida for sending two suicide car bombs that blew up in Damascus Friday, killing 44 and wounding dozens more. Opponents of Assad suggested the regime itself might have been responsible.

Less knowledge, more power: Uninformed can be vital to democracy, study finds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? Contrary to the ideal of a completely engaged electorate, individuals who have the least interest in a specific outcome can actually be vital to achieving a democratic consensus. These individuals dilute the influence of powerful minority factions who would otherwise dominate everyone else, according to new research published in the journal Science.

A Princeton University-based research team reports Dec. 16 that this finding -- based on group decision-making experiments on fish, as well as mathematical models and computer simulations -- can ultimately provide insights into humans' political behavior.

The researchers report that in animal groups, uninformed individuals -- as in those with no prior knowledge or strong feelings on a situation's outcome -- tend to side with and embolden the numerical majority. Relating the results to human political activity, the study challenges the common notion that an outspoken minority can manipulate uncommitted voters.

"The classic view is that uninformed or uncommitted individuals may allow extreme views to proliferate. We found that might not be the case," said lead author Iain Couzin, a Princeton assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. He and his co-authors found that even a small population of indifferent individuals act as a counterbalance to the minority -- whose passion even can cause informed individuals in the majority to waver -- and restore majority rule.

"We show that when the uninformed participate, the group can come to a majority decision even in the face of a powerful minority," Couzin said. "They prevent deadlock and fragmentation because the strength of an opinion no longer matters -- it comes down to numbers. You can imagine this being a good or bad thing. Either way, a certain number of uninformed individuals keep that minority from dictating or complicating the behavior of the group."

Of course this effect has its limits, Couzin said. He and his co-authors also found that if the number of uninformed becomes too high, a group ceases to function coherently, with neither the majority nor the minority taking the lead. "Eventually, noise dominates because there just aren't enough informed individuals to guide the group," he said.

Parallels to humans

An important aspect of the findings, said Couzin, is that they are based on experiments on groups of fish, as well as mathematical models and computer simulations. Though the idea of uninformed populations benefiting the democratic process seems counterintuitive, the experimental results suggest that this dynamic is a naturally occurring decision-making process, he said.

The experiments involved golden shiners, a fish prone to associating the color yellow with a food reward, Couzin said. The researchers trained groups of golden shiners to swim toward a blue target, while smaller groups were trained to follow their natural predilection for a yellow target. When the two groups were placed together, the minority's stronger desire for the yellow target dominated the group's behavior. As fish with no prior training (the uninformed individuals) were introduced, however, the fish increasingly swam toward the majority-preferred blue target, the researchers report.

"We think of being informed as good and being uninformed as bad, but that's a human construct. Animal groups are rarely in a fractious state and we see consensus a lot," said Couzin, who studies the behavior and communication behind animal movement, swarming and flocking.

"These experiments indicate there is an evolutionary function to being uninformed that perhaps is as active as being informed," he said. "Animals may be equally adaptable to simply going with the majority in certain circumstances because having that quick decision-making capability is beneficial for survival. We shouldn't think of it as a bad thing, but look at advantages animals exhibit to being uninformed in natural circumstances."

Donald Saari, a professor of mathematics and economics at the University of California-Irvine who studies voting systems, said he sees parallels to the Princeton-led work in markets and politics.

Highly informed economic forecasters and political activists frequently lose out to the masses of consumers and regular voters who base decisions on personal preferences and reasons more than on expertise, said Saari, who is familiar with the Science report but had no role in it.

For instance, he said, the arc from minority domination to pluralism to the potential degeneration into "noise," as described in the Princeton study, can be seen in the American electoral system.

A forceful minority can dominate in circumstances that attract the more politically inclined, such as midterm elections and primaries. In more popular elections, however, that influence wanes as less passionate people participate. Situations in which a candidate's personality or personal life takes precedent over policy positions in voters' minds could be an equivalent to the breakdown in direction Couzin and his co-authors found when there is a glut of uninformed individuals, Saari said.

"This study gives us a new interpretation of group decision making that really flies in the face of previous opinions. We usually assume that a highly opinionated and forceful group is going to sway everyone," Saari said.

"What we have we here is something very different," he said. "It doesn't say whether or not the consensus it good, it just provides a way of understanding when and how the consensus changes. If the numbers of the uninformed, or people who don't have a strong opinion, are large enough, that dilutes the effect of the highly opinionated or knowledgeable in the final outcome. Quite frankly, I think it's because the highly opinionated are not in the center and the uninformed, to a large extent, are."

Saari said that there might be an additional consideration or factor that uninformed individuals bring to the group process rather than mere devotion to the majority opinion.

"These results raise a lot of questions for me and present another way of thinking about and coming up with explanations for what we observe in group dynamics," he said.

"I think the effect the uninformed have is much more than just number-counting plurality and that they're offering something else," Saari said. "Why are the fish with no 'opinion' more effective toward taking the group toward plurality than the fish that only had some opinion? What is that additional dynamic, what are the real contributions of the uninformed? I don't know what it is, but I do know it's worth investigating."

The power of the uninformed in simulations and reality

The researchers developed three models that initially revealed and described how uninformed individuals restore popular power. The modeling work was based on a computational tool developed in Couzin's lab that predicts and explains animal group behavior based on various forms of social interaction among group members. Couzin first reported the model in the journal Nature in 2005.

For the current work in Science, Couzin worked with, from Princeton, second author Christos Ioannou, a former postdoctoral fellow in Couzin's lab who is now a research fellow at the University of Bristol; postdoctoral researcher Colin Torney and doctoral student Andrew Hartnett, both in Couzin's lab; and professors Simon Levin, the Moffett Professor of Biology and co-author of the 2005 Nature paper, and Naomi Leonard, the Edwin S. Wilsey Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The team also included G?ven Demirel, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems; Thilo Gross, an engineering lecturer at the University of Bristol; and Larissa Conradt, a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge.

In this project, Couzin used his model to first simulate animal groups of different sizes with a majority and a minority population, each with a differing preference to move in a certain direction. He added the factor of how strongly the respective groups felt about their preference, a variable he could increase or decrease.

As expected, the researchers report, if the majority's preference was just as strong or stronger than the minority's, the group moved in the direction the majority favored. But when the intensity of the minority's preference increased, the animals as a whole frequently caved to that group's desires. In the groups with the strongest minority preference, the animals always went with the minority.

Couzin then added a third group, the uninformed, that had no preference on the direction to move. The model showed that even the presence of one or two uninformed individuals caused an immediate change in the group's behavior. The uninformed individuals were ultimately most effective in the groups with the least committed minority and those with the smallest total number of members. But even in groups with the most adamant minority, the majority took back control with less than 10 uninformed individuals present.

"Consensus naturally emerges in these models once uninformed individuals are introduced," Couzin said. "There is a sharp transition from minority to majority control. At a certain threshold, only a few uninformed individuals can alter the entire outcome of group decisions."

Mathematical models -- one created by Demirel and Gross, another by Torney -- helped explain the mysterious pull of the uninformed individuals. These models were based on social processes in human groups, such as how conventions become established, or how people influence each other's opinions, Couzin said.

The calculations indicated that during the decision-making process, all individuals have a tendency to follow what they perceive as the predominant view, but opinionated individuals are more resistant to social pressure, Couzin explained. This reluctance to compromise manipulates the perception of what is popular, meaning that the strong convictions of the minority can make their view seem dominant. Uninformed individuals, having no strong opinion or preference, tend to inhibit this process because they respond quickly to numerical rather than semantic differences and curb the influence of forceful individuals.

The models were used to design the experiments with the golden shiners, which Ioannou, who was not aware of the hypothesis being tested, conducted over a three-month period. The majority group of fish trained to swim toward the blue target consisted of six fish; five fish made up the strongly "opinionated" minority group, which was driven by a natural attraction to the color yellow.

As in the simulations, the minority group won out when uninformed individuals were not present and the fish swam toward the yellow target in slightly more than 80 percent of the trials where only the minority and majority groups were present.

The untrained fish, however, which were introduced in groups of five or 10, consistently put the group on course toward the blue target, Couzin explained. When five were added, the whole group went toward the blue target half the time. In trials with 10 untrained fish present, the fish made their way to the blue target nearly 70 percent of the time.

"We saw that the counterweight to a powerful minority can come from the least expected population -- the uninformed," Couzin said.

"It was extremely rewarding to see this counterintuitive prediction play out in reality with living organisms," he said. "Our work is a simplification of reality, but it allows the underlying mechanics of this type of decision making to be observed and understood."

The research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Searle Scholars Program, the U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research, the Royal Society and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency administered by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Video: Deadly flu virus created in the lab

>>> back now with a story that got our attention today. scientists have created a flu virus on purpose in the lab that could potentially kill a lot of people. now a big fight is about to erupt over how much to reveal to the wider world about it. we get more tonight from our chief science correspondent robert bazell .

>> reporter: starting with the virus that causes bird flu , two scientists have created a highly contagious version in the laboratory that one calls probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make. a government committee is deciding how much detail scientific journals should reveal. and the controversial decision is due soon. some top scientists think the entire project is wrong.

>> i think it's a bad idea for us to take a lethal virus and transform it into a trance misable one and a second bad idea to publish the results.

>> reporter: bird flu called h1n1 first jumped from chickens to humans in hong kong in 1998 and was deadly, killing about 60% of the people infected. the city stopped the outbreak by killing all chickens. since then periodic outbreaks have occurred but the virus has never been very contagious, only infecting a few people at a time. the two scientists, one in europe and the other at the university of wisconsin , genetically altereded wild bird flu so it could be easily transmitted from person to person. they used ferrets. they submitted to results to two top journals, "science" and "nature." scientists did this to see what would have to happen in nature to make a pandemic. others say it could be a cookbook for terrorists. a government panel will make the recommendations. it's not certain the journal wills follow them scary stuff.

(AP) ? "Batman" star Christian Bale, in the midst of promoting a film he made in China that some critics have called propaganda, was stopped trying to visit a blind activist living under house arrest ? with a CNN crew in tow.

CNN posted footage of a scuffle between Bale and the activist's guards on its website Friday.

The run-in and publicity is likely to cause discomfort in China's government-backed film industry, which hopes Bale's movie "The Flowers of War" will be a creative success at home and abroad. It also raises questions about whether it was prudent to bring the star to see an activist guarded by thugs who have turned away dozens of reporters and fellow activists trying to see him in the past.

Bale was due to leave China on Friday and his representatives could not immediately be reached for comment. A CNN spokesman did not immediately respond to questions about the story, but said a statement would be forthcoming.

Bale, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for last year's "The Fighter," traveled Thursday with a crew from CNN to the village in eastern China where blind lawyer Chen Guangcheng lives with his family in complete isolation.

They were stopped at the entrance to Dongshigu village in Shandong province by unidentified men.

The footage shows Bale asking to see Chen, with a CNN producer providing interpretation, but being ordered by one of the guards to leave. He then asked why he was unable to pass through. The guards responded by trying to grab or punch a small video camera Bale was carrying.

"What I really wanted to do was to meet the man, shake his hand and say what an inspiration he is," Bale was quoted as saying by CNN.

Journalists and scores of Chinese human rights activists have sought to visit Chen in the past, all unsuccessfully. Chen's case has also been raised publicly by U.S. congressmen and diplomats, including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, all to no response from China.

CNN said Bale first learned of Chen from news reports when he was in China filming "The Flowers of War," China's official submission for best foreign language film Oscar. It said he "reached out to CNN and invited us to join him on his journey to visit Chen."

Who can Tito fight to close out his career? Griffin facing the end too says he?d take the fight

Even when Tito Ortiz went winless during five fights over four years between 2006-2010, he could still trumpet the fact that he wasn't taking major abuse. He can't do so after his last two losses where he took a ton of damage especially to the body against Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. That has Dana White torn on whether to let Ortiz have one final fight with the UFC.

If White feels he's not putting the 36-year-old in harm's way then the task becomes booking an opponent that can be sold as a legitimate fight.

Before UFC 140, Ortiz reiterated his desire for a third shot at Forrest Griffin. Griffin appeared on Sunday on the Las Vegas-based radio show "The MMA Fight Corner" to respond to Tito's challenge.

"If people will pay to see that fight then I'll get paid to fight that fight," Griffin said on FoxSportsRadio920. "But do people want to see it?"

Griffin, who's only 32 years old, surprised listeners by admitting that his career could be coming to an end shortly.

"For me, now I'm realizing that I don't have much left. This is the end of the road me. I want a couple more fight fights. Good ones. Fights where I don't get knocked out in the first round," laughed Griffin. "Fights where I like get hurt, bleed a little, but I kind of like rally. Something of that nature."

Griffin has been rocked and finished in three of his last five fights. He's also battled injuries. Those five fights took place over the course of 36 months.

Tito's lack of massive power and the fact that the two already hooked up for two pretty entertaining three-round fights sounds like the perfect match for Griffin, who continued to joke about his recent struggles against heavy hitters.

"I'm cool with wrestling now. I don't mind the wrestling so much. It's the getting hit hard that I don't seem to like anymore. I don't mind it but my nervous system seems to be really in disagreement with it these days," said Griffin.

Griffin was mainly non-chalant when asked about who else he'd like to fight. The most important thing for the former UFC light heavyweight champ is to fight in the U.S. Griffin cuts a ton of weight and doesn't like being out of his comfort zone in the States the week before the fight.

Listen to The MMA Fight corner on Wednesdays (8-9:30 p.m PT) and Sundays (9-10 p.m. PT) on FoxSportsRadio920.

Zynga rival Nexon's Tokyo IPO set at $1.2 billion (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Online gaming firm Nexon Co fixed the price for its $1.2 billion initial public offering on Monday at the mid-point of a pre-set range, following U.S.-based rival Zynga in settling for a more conservative valuation amid tough stock market conditions.

The public offering, Japan's biggest this year, was several times oversubscribed, reflecting investor expectations that the firm will continue to expand profits thanks to the increasing popularity of online gaming both domestically and overseas.

Nexon offers PC-based games for free while charging small amounts for in-game virtual items, a business model analysts see as relatively recession-proof.

"There are not that many Japanese companies with overseas growth stories. That makes it attractive," said Toru Hashizume, chief investment officer at Stats Investment Management. He declined to say if Stats would participate in the IPO.

Nexon said it would sell shares at 1,300 yen each, picking the middle of a book-building range of 1,200-1,400 after sounding out investors for the global offering last week, and coming in below the initial reference price of 1,360 yen.

It will list on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's first section on December 14, meaning it will be added to the TOPIX index, therefore drawing demand from index funds.

At the IPO price Nexon will raise about 91 billion yen ($1.2 billion) and boast a market value of 560 billion yen, roughly the same as mobile gaming firm Gree Inc, whose stock has jumped more than 7 times since listing three years ago.

The pricing came after Zynga, known for its success with games on Facebook, was forced last week to lower the expected valuation for its IPO this month, due to weak markets and macroeconomic uncertainty.

Nexon has more than 77 million active monthly users, compared with Zynga's 260 million.

While demand for the Nexon offering was strong, a decision was made not to price at the top of the range to ensure a good mix of long-term investors and give the stock a good shot at rising after listing, a source with knowledge of the book-building said.

CYBER ATTACK

A cyber attack in which hackers gained access to personal but no financial information on more than 13 million subscribers to its popular role playing game MapleStory in South Korea probably took some of the shine off the IPO, a Japanese broker not involved in the offering said.

"There has been increasing caution among investors, which is why it did not come in at the top of the 1,200-1,400 yen range," said Takashi Matsumoto, a director at Okasan Securities.

The IPO, Japan's largest since drugmaker Otsuka Holdings took in 160 billion yen in December 2010, was launched despite weak market conditions, with the benchmark Nikkei average down 15 percent since the start of the year.

Last week Nikko Asset Management, which was also due to list in Tokyo this month, cancelled its IPO. [ID:nL4E7N20FR]

Nexon, established in South Korea in 1994, plans to use 14 billion yen of the proceeds to pay off debt, another 9 billion yen to construct a new building for its main subsidiary Nexon Korea Corporation and the remainder on upgrading games systems, including potential investments in third-party games developers.

Nexon's most successful offerings include MapleStory and KartRider. Its operating profit tripled to 30 billion yen in the year to December 2010 from 2008, while sales increased more than 70 percent to 70 billion yen.

At the offering price Nexon would trade at 15 times projected consensus earnings for calendar 2012, according to the source, putting it roughly in line with Gree.

Nexon is selling half of the shares overseas and half in Japan.

Nomura Securities, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs are joint global coordinators, while Barclays Capital is a bookrunner on the international tranche.
