Take Caution During Pampering as a Breast Cancer Patient and Survivor

Recently I broke my own strict rules for protecting my health. I had lymph nodes removed under my arm at the time of my mastectomy, so I need to protect my arm from infection and unnecessary stress. This means that when I go to a doctor?s office I insist that the blood pressure test or blood draws be performed on my leg or the other arm. Likewise, when I have a manicure, I am careful to inspect how they clean their utensils and caution them to be careful with any cutting devices. One thing I am truly adamant about is that there is no cutting of my cuticles ? only pushing them back on the fingers and toes. Generally I will frequent the same salon so the person I work with knows my preferences and is very careful.

However, a dear friend gave me a generous gift card to another establishment, and I was happy to take advantage of it with a mani/pedi in preparation for several events I attend over the summer. As I settled into the massaging lounge to begin the pedicure, I truly forgot any rules or cautionary measures I usually insist on. By the time I was admiring my brightly painted toes while having my fingernails painted, I had completely overlooked the trimming of the cuticles that was performed. It wasn?t until I was drying my nails under a fan that I realized that my strict personal health code had been violated.

Lymph nodes allow for draining of infection and support the smooth operation of the immune system. Removal of lymph nodes during surgery not only limits the number of lymph nodes available, but can also plug them and decrease their efficiency due to scar tissue. This can increase the chances of infection and in worst cases may lead to lymphedema of the affected arm, which is hard to treat. I know of only one doctor, Dr. Rebecca Studinger in Novi, Mich., who does the reconstruction of lymph nodes to help improve this condition, and it is far from a simple procedure. Avoiding situations that can lead to lymphedema is essential in continuing to care for ourselves as breast cancer survivors.

Often, friends and family members purchase gift cards for spa days and relaxing massages for loved ones going through breast cancer treatment wanting to help them feel better. The temptation to be pampered during chemotherapy, however, is often overshadowed by the feelings of nausea and fatigue. Furthermore, during chemotherapy or radiation, I really recommend that these spa visits be avoided. Your immune system is compromised by the drugs and treatment, and infection is easy to pick up regardless of how clean the environment is.

Being cautious is lifelong. Survivors who have had lymph nodes affected especially need to avoid additional stress on the immune system and delicate nodes. We are battle strong but wellness compromised. Vigilance is the order of the day ? every day. Take advantage of your gift cards; just wait until your body systems have all been restored and healed after treatment, and above all, don?t let anyone cut your cuticles.

Why You Shouldn't Delay Estate Planning

For those of us who are leading busy lives, juggling work and family, financial and estate planning for the retirement years is often treated as a ?back burner? issue. However, a sudden illness or disability can throw lives into chaos, so it is very important to have a financial and estate plan in order, for the ?rainy day? when they are most needed.

An elder law attorney and a financial planner are two very key professionals who can help people navigate through the myriad of options for investments, insurance and estate planning documents that are needed. You can find elder law attorneys in your area by calling the local Bar Association.

When looking for a financial planner, look for one with the CFP designation, which stands for ?Certified Financial Planner.? A good financial plan will analyze your income needs and project your living expenses into the future. This calculation allows you to maximize your income today while saving enough for the future. Financial plans can also help with budgeting, so that your income is used as efficiently as possible.

A financial plan will also analyze your investments and make sure that they are appropriate for your age and risk tolerance. With the right balance, your investments will provide income today and adequate growth for the future.

In addition, a good financial plan will evaluate your insurance coverage and make sure that you have appropriate protection. This includes Medigap, long term care and life insurance. An important goal of the planning process is to make sure that individuals have adequate resources for the remainder of their lives. Therefore, a financial planner should also know about any chronic disease or special needs you might have.

Some older people allow insurance policies to lapse as it becomes harder to pay the premiums. Letting policies lapse can be very costly when illness or disability occurs. Older people can also be over-insured, wasting premium payments on unnecessary coverage. A financial planner can advise you on what policies you need.

Half of all people over 85 will exhibit some symptoms of Alzheimer?s Disease. Due to this high risk of mental incapacity, individuals should name a trusted family member to make decisions on their behalf. Legal documents called advance directives are created, usually by an elder law attorney, to ensure that the individual?s wishes are followed in the event of mental incapacity. These documents include a living will, health care surrogate designation, durable power of attorney and, in some cases, a living trust.

It is also important to inform your family members of your decisions. An elder law attorney can also make sure that you have the right provisions in place to direct your assets to where you want them to go when you die. This includes having an updated last will and testament, as well as
making sure the beneficiary designations on all your retirement accounts, life insurance policies and annuities reflects your current intentions. The elder law attorney will also look at the way you have your home and property titled, so that they are passed on to the right party.

Although most people would prefer to rely on their own financial resources when it comes to paying for long-term care, there may come a time when financial savings have been exhausted and you need to apply for Medicaid. If this happens, you will need professional guidance about the complex rules.

Attorneys have the most updated information regarding the eligibility rules for Medicaid, so it is best to consult legal advice when you consider transferring assets and converting assets into income or establishing special trusts. Financial planners should also be involved in these actions, in partnership with you and the attorney.

It is very important to keep your legal and financial documents properly organized and readily available. Keep your investment, insurance and banking statements in a three-ring binder. Keep your legal documents and insurance policies in a safe deposit box, and make sure that a trusted family member or friend has access. Provide copies of your advance directive documents to your doctor and to the executor of your estate.

It is crucial that you share knowledge with your family as to where all of your legal documents are kept. If they are called upon in the future to handle your affairs, they will be very thankful for the information.

Sussex County a leader in digital communication - All VoIP News

NEWTON ? Sussex County's use of information and communications research has been ranked first among all counties in the nation its size, according to a voluntary survey released by the National Association of Counties.

Each annual survey shows the direction digital innovation has taken across the country and, according to officials, "2011 left little doubt operational efficiency is guiding decisions in Sussex and county innovation offices everywhere."

Larry E. Naake, the national association's executive director, said the Digital Counties Survey, "identified best practices and innovative uses of innovation crucial with today's constrained budgets to maintaining and even improving service levels."

The county moved to the top of its size classification because of its development of server and desktop virtualization and creation of a private cloud computing model, which can be used by any other municipality in the county.

With the network combining its resources into a pool, available resources can be split into independent networks and each private network can be assigned to a particular government's requirements.

The county's entire network has been replaced with the private cloud allowing the county to share resources, improve research services and reducing the overall cost of the system.

'The Post-Olympic City' Shows What Became Of Ex-Olympic Sites At The Storefront For Art & Architecture (PHOTOS)

During the Olympic ceremonies, the stadiums glow with the spirit of excitement as tourists pour into temporary sites. But what becomes of these locales after the thrill of the games has passed? The exhibition titled, "The Post-Olympic City" at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York revisits former Olympic host cities and explores their lives following the transformative games.

2_the post olympic city

Photographers Gary Hustwit and Jon Pack visited former Olympic homes Athens, Barcelona, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Montreal, Lake Placid, Rome, and Sarajevo, collecting videos, images and other materials along the way.

Some of the sites take on more functional roles, though far less glamorous, becoming malls, gyms and prisons. For example, Los Angeles' Grand Olympic Auditorium is reborn as the Glory Church of Jesus Christ, depicted with a presumably homeless man asleep on the sidewalk. Fully estranged from its former glory, the site blends in to the smog-filled suburban landscape. Others fail to ever move on from their original purpose, rotting as shells of their long-lost greatness. And others, like Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City now accommodate Metallica concerts and other big-name musical acts.

Most of the photographs portray leave a bleak image of the cities, whether they attempt to assimilate back into everyday life or stay untouched, becoming ghosts of their former selves. The photography collection is a bleak foil to the excitement and over-the-top spectacle of the Olympics, reminding us that the glitter of the Games will eventually fade away. The project is ongoing, with the artists planning to revisit Beijing, Moscow, Berlin and London in the upcoming year.

"The Post-Olympic City" will show at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York from August 7-14.

See a slideshow of the photos below, and let us know your thoughts about former Olympics sites in the comments section. Is it worth the money?

Red hot Park surges to Evian victory

South Korea's Park Inbee had a magical day with the putter to hold off a bunch of players and win the Evian Masters with a fantastic closing 66 here on Sunday.

The 24-year-old started the day tied with American Stacy Lewis, but had 11 single putts and eight birdies to post a 17 under par total and won by two shots from Lewis and Karrie Webb, the veteran Australian who won back in 2006.

Lewis, the leader from round one, eagled the last from 30 feet for a 68, while Webb birdied the final two holes for a 67.

China's Feng Shanshan, who holed a bunker shot for an eagle at the last and a 66, South Korean amateur Kim Hyo Joo (68), and the 2007 champion Natalie Gulbis (68) of the United States shared fourth place on 14 under par.

"This is so exciting," said Park, who dropped shots at the third and 11th but birdied four holes in each half. "Today I was red hot with the putter."

Park's win was just her second as a professional, but she has proved she has the nerve for the big occasion.

Her first win was as a 19-year-old in the US Women's Open - and the 350,000 euro ($431,000) first prize at Evian is the most lucrative in women's golf.

"It's been tough to wait so long for another win but I think this will be really big for me."

By contrast her playing partner Lewis, the runner-up last year, could not buy a putt in the first 14 holes and had another hiccup when she cracked the face of her driver hitting from the 12th tee.

But she battled bravely with birdies at the 15th and 16th and then holed the monster for eagle at the 18th.

South Korea's 17-year-old amateur Joo completed an amazing week with her 68 - her fourth sub-70 score - for 14 under par.

Winner of the World Junior (15-17-years) Championship last year, Kim has already won as a 16-year-old amateur on the Korean and Japanese Women's Tours and intends joining the professional ranks at the LPGA Championship in South Korea in October.

"I have had a great time here," she said through an interpreter. "It was really good fun and I played really well."

Karine Icher, who has had three top tens on the LPGA Tour in America this season, was on her first trip back home to France since the birth of her first child, Lola. And she produced a great final round of 69 to tie for 12th place on nine under par.

Lola is 11 months old, and the 33-year-old said: "My life has changed forever since she arrived. To have a baby, it's completely different. Now my priority is not my golf but my daughter. But I'm more relaxed and it's fun to travel with her."

Icher had four birdies in the final round and she is already looking forward to next year when the tournament will become the fifth women's major alongside the US and British Women's Opens and the Kraft Nabisco and LPGA Championships.

"It's going to be super," she said after her closing four birdie round.

"France is not a big country. We don't have a lot of golf courses like in the United States. We're going to have the Ryder Cup in 2018 and next year we're going to have a women's major. It means so much."

Romney's Israel speech: Iran will be 'highest national security priority'

In a signal foreign policy speech in Jerusalem, former governor Mitt Romney said that preventing Iran from building a nuclear weapon should be the "highest national security priority," and chided President Barack Obama for quarreling with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over how to do it.

However, the presumptive Republican nominee for president offered few hints on what he would do differently from the Obama administration. Though a senior adviser, Dan Senor, earlier suggested that Mr. Romney would "respect" an Israeli decision to launch a lone attack, Romney in his speech reiterated the more vague formulation of the Obama administration that "we recognize Israel?s right to defend itself."

He did reproach the president indirectly for chastising the Israeli leaders for saber rattling, a remark made when Mr. Netanyahu last visited Washington.

"It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war," Romney said. "The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers."

Romney's visit has escalated the competition between the two campaigns to demonstrate who's a stronger supporter of the Jewish state. Obama on Friday announced $70 million in additional military aid to help develop a rocket system to intercept missiles from Gaza and Lebanon.

Israeli officials and analysts are anxious about Israel being in the election's spotlight, and would prefer the country to be more of an afterthought. That?s because an election debate over Israel could damage long term ties between they countries by risking the Jewish state's long cultivated bipartisan support in Washington.

"We don?t want to be part of the issue," says an Israeli diplomat, who was not authorized to speak. "We have very strong bi-partisan support and we want to keep it that way. We want there to be strong relations with the US. Not with blue or red."

ROMNEY: JERUSALEM IS CAPITAL

Speaking against the backdrop of Jerusalem's Old City, Romney called the disputed city Israel's capital. That's likely to bother Palestinians and Arab countries who claim East Jerusalem ? the portions captured in the 1967 Arab Israeli War ? as capital of a Palestinian state.

In another dig at Obama ? who has been bragging about stepped up military cooperation with Israel ? Romney blamed the president for allowing public disputes to emerge: "Standing by Israel does not mean with military and intelligence cooperation alone," he said. "We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel, voice their criticisms. And we certainly should not join in that criticism. Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel's adversaries.''

Romney?s portrayal of Iran seemed to echo Netanyahu's apocalyptic comparisons of Iran and Nazi Germany. The Republican nominee said Iran's leaders are "testing our moral defenses" and added "we have seen the horrors of history. we will not stand by. We will not watch them play out again."

His warning that "when the world?s most despotic regimes secure the world?s most dangerous weapons" will lead to war also seemed to echo remarks made by Netanyahu just last week about the need to stop Iran.

Second billing in Mr. Romney?s speech was given to the tumult in Syria and the political transition in Egypt. He gave no policy direction on Syria, and urged Egypt to uphold its peace treaty with Israel, like the administration has done.

Absent from the speech was any mention of the peace process with the Palestinians, which has been mothballed for years and shows no signs of resuming. Just two weeks ago, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton repeated President Obama that "the status quo is unacceptable."

ROMNEY'S BROADER CRITIQUE

This is the second presidential election in which the Jewish state has become a campaign stop. In 2008, both Obama and Sen. John McCain took breaks from campaigning in the US to visit here.

But the open bickering between Obama and Netanyahu over the peace process with the Palestinians and how to confront Iran has made support for Israel an issue for debate, and part of Romney?s broader foreign policy critique that the administration has failed to stand behind allies and projected weakness.

Romney?s visit is also seen as an attempt to indirectly highlight the fact that President Obama did not visit Israel in his first four years of office when he visited other American allies in the Muslim world, stirring up criticism from some Israelis.

"Romney feels that the president may be somewhat vulnerable. Romney may sense that there is some Israeli dismay at some Obama policies and sees an opportunity," said David Horvitz, the editor of the Times of Israel news website. "Unfortunately, Israel has become an issue of greater partisan debate than it used to?. That?s tremendously to Israel?s detriment."

Despite Romney?s oft-quoted allegation that Obama has "thrown" Israel "under the bus," many Israelis are unfamiliar with Romney because they aren?t paying attention to the US election. A recent poll among Israeli Jews by the Begin Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, an institute at Bar Ilan University, showed Romney with a 7 percentage point edge over Obama regarding who would better promote Israel?s interests, but 49 percent said they don?t know.

JEWISH-AMERICAN VOTERS AT STAKE

At stake is an attempt by Romney to make inroads with the Jewish American community who have solidly supported Democratic presidential candidates. In 2008, Obama was favored by 74 percent of American Jews, second only to African Americans among demographic groups, but now that support is at only 68 percent, according to a recent Gallup survey. Some believe that only a slight shift could help capture a crucial swing state like Florida, where Jews make up a significant chunk of the registered voters.

Some have accused Netanyahu, who is known to be on better terms with Republican politicians than Democrats, of feeding into the polarization. Standing alongside Romney on Sunday, the Israeli prime minister took a dig at the administration by saying the administration?s policy of sanctions and diplomacy to pressure Iran had failed to delay Iran's drive for nuclear weapons.

"We have to be honest and say that all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota," he said.

Just two weeks ago US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Jerusalem that sanctions and diplomacy had brought unprecedented pressure on Tehran and needed more time to work.

BILATERAL POLARIZATION

Some see the increased partisanship as a natural expression of the affinity between the two countries? respective ideological rivals: The Republicans are more drawn to Netanyahu?s conservative Likud party, and Democrats find common cause with social democrats on the Israeli left, like the Labor Party. A scheduled visit between Romney and the Israeli Labor Party leader was cancelled.

Republicans and the Israeli right see common cause "on three issues: the Land of Israel, religion, and family values," says Mitchell Barak, an Israeli pollster. "There?s a natural connection to the Israeli left to the Democrats, and vice versa: That?s based on share values of democracy, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and protection of minorities."

But that risks upsetting a key strategy by pro-Israel allies in the US of cultivating support among both Democrats and Republicans in order to ensure that there?s continuity of US support for Israel regardless of who controls the White House or the Congress.

"It was very easy to stay out of this when American presidential candidates didn?t come to Israel three or four months before the election," says one American Jewish official active in boosting bilateral ties. "If it looks like you look like you are backing one, and the other gets elected, you are in trouble."

(AP) ? A friend says a Maryland man accused of threatening to shoot up his workplace is a "gentle giant" who collected weapons and had expressed concerns about break-ins near his apartment complex.

Mike Cochran tells The Associated Press on Saturday that he thinks his friend, Neil E. Prescott, did not intend for his comments to be taken seriously. Cochran says Prescott was known for having a sarcastic sense of humor.

Police say Prescott, who was in the process of being fired, told a supervisor this week that he was a "joker" and was going to load his guns and "blow everybody up." Prescott was taken into custody for an emergency psychiatric evaluation and has not been charged.

Cochran says Prescott was "no stranger to sarcasm regardless of political correctness."

Phelps, Park, Biedermann among swim surprises

LONDON (AP) ? Michael Phelps barely qualified in the 400-meter individual medley, Olympic champion Park Tae-hwan was disqualified and world record-holder Paul Biedermann failed to make the final in a surprising first day of swimming at the London Games on Saturday.

Phelps' slow preliminary time was the biggest shocker of all. The 14-time gold medalist squeaked into the last spot in the eight-man final by seven-hundredths of a second, saying, "That one didn't feel too good."

Queen Elizabeth appeared briefly at the Aquatics Centre, but the biggest buzz involved the big names who struggled.

South Korea's Park won his 400 freestyle preliminary heat, but was disqualified for a false start by a judge on the pool deck. The South Koreans filed a protest with the sport's world governing body, which convened a 22-member panel to decide the case.

Biedermann of Germany won't swim in the evening final. Defending Olympic champion Stephanie Rice took the next-to-last spot in the women's 400 IM.

"That's the Olympics," said Canadian Ryan Cochrane, who snagged the last spot in the 400 free final, but would miss out if Park was reinstated. "It's always a surprise, every single heat. You just have to focus on your own race."

Phelps, the two-time defending Olympic champion, won his 400 IM heat in 4 minutes, 13.33 seconds with a time that was well off his world record of 4:03.84 set four years ago in Beijing, when Phelps won a record eight gold medals.

But it was only good enough to secure the last spot in the evening final, when Phelps will swim in Lane 8 instead of the middle of the pool. He breathes to his right, so he won't see the field coming home.

"The only thing that matters is just getting a spot in," he said. "You can't win the gold medal from the morning."

In the 400 IM, Kosuke Hagino of Japan led the way in 4:10.01, a national record. Chad le Clos of South Africa was second at 4:12.24, and Ryan Lochte of the United States advanced in third at 4:12.35.

Phelps' time was just fast enough to keep Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, the silver medalist in Beijing, out of the final. Cseh was ninth overall after leading Phelps during their heat before the American closed on the last lap of freestyle to beat him to the wall.

"I didn't expect those guys to go that fast in their heat," Phelps said. "I was slower this morning than I was four years ago."

Phelps' time in the grueling event that he had vowed not to swim again after Beijing took some of the luster off what was expected to be a showdown between him and Lochte for gold.

"You can't count him out," Lochte said of Phelps. "Even though he just squeaked in eighth, he's a racer. We're going to do everything we can to go 1-2 tonight."

Lochte, the bronze medalist in Beijing, has won the 400 IM at the last two world championships.

"My first race is always the worst one," he said. "I'm glad I got the cobwebs out."

Kosuke Kitajima of Japan opened his bid to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three consecutive Olympics. He qualified second-quickest in the 100 breaststroke at 59.63 seconds behind Christian Sprenger of Australia in 59.62.

"I don't have any pressure, I just try to enjoy," Kitajima said. "It felt so good. It was good for my first race. I will try to improve in the semifinals."

Giedrius Titenis of Lithuania was third at 59.68. Twelve of the 16 swimmers who reached the semifinals swam under 1 minute.

American Brendan Hansen, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist who was fourth in Beijing, qualified 10th at 59.93. His teammate, Eric Shanteau, was 11th at 59.96.

"Everybody seemed to be going out real fast in the first 50," Hansen said. "I wanted to come home strong. I let everybody know that last 50 is going to be there. This race is going to be won in the last 15 meters."

Missing from the 100 breast was Alexander Dale Oen of Norway, the current world champion who would have been a medal contender in these games. He died in April of cardiac arrest at 26 during a training camp in Arizona.

"We're carrying him with us all the time," Sara Nordenstam of Norway said after her heat in the 400 IM. "We have our own way of honoring him ? that's swimming fast and remembering him and remember everything that he taught us and go for the goals that we set together."

Dana Vollmer had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 butterfly at 56.25, setting American and Olympic records, to lead 16 women into the evening semifinals.

"I'm really happy with how fast it was and I think it's only going to get faster," she said. "That's kind of a confidence-booster. I'm ready to go."

Lu Ying of China was second in 57.17 and Australian Alicia Coutts was third at 57.36. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, the world record holder, was fourth at 57.45.

American Claire Donahue moved on in seventh, while British teammates Francesca Hall and Ellen Gandy were eighth and ninth.

Jess Schipper of Australia, the bronze medalist four years ago, was 24th and missed the semifinals by eight spots.

In the 400 free, Sun Yang of China qualified fastest in 3:45.07. American Peter Vanderkaay was second at 3:45.80, followed by his teammates Conor Dwyer in 3:46.24.

Park was surprised by his DQ, saying, "I don't know why" after he walked off the deck. In Beijing, he became South Korea's first swimming gold medalist and then won the world title in Shanghai last year.

Biedermann washed out for the second straight Olympics. He also didn't make it out of the heats in Beijing. He set the world record at the 2009 world meet in Rome at the height of the high-tech body suit craze. Those suits have since been banned.

"It wasn't so good," he said. "I wanted to lead from the front, but I couldn't hold it."

World champion Elizabeth Beisel of the United States qualified fastest in the women's 400 IM at 4:31.68. Ye Shiwen of China was second at 4:31.73.

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who trains at the University of Southern California, was third in 4:33.77. Britain's Hannah Miley got the loudest cheers while advancing to the final in sixth.

Rice, a triple gold medalist in Beijing who has struggled with shoulder injuries the last three years, was seventh.

"Whew! That took quite a bit out of me," Rice said. "I know that I've done everything I could. I'm pretty at peace with the fact that I'm just going to get in there and do my thing and see what happens."

American Caitlin Leverenz got the last spot in the eight-woman final.

Australia had the fastest qualifying time in the 4x100 free relay. Emily Seebohm, Brittany Elmslie, Yolane Kukla and Libby Trickett were timed in 3:36.34.

The U.S. team of Lia Neal, Amanda Weir, Natalie Coughlin and Allison Schmitt was second at 3:36.53.

"I think we did our goal of putting us in a good spot for tonight, which was the main thing," said Coughlin, who has 11 career medals but didn't qualify to swim any individual events in London.

She has a chance to join Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson as the most decorated U.S. female Olympian if the Americans earn a medal in the evening final, whether or not Coughlin returns to swim. Torres and Thompson both won 12 career medals.

The defending champion Dutch team of Marleen Veldhuis, Inge Dekker, Hinkelien Schreuder and Femke Heemskerk was third at 3:37.76.

Grace Keillor, the mother of iconic Minnesota author and broadcaster Garrison Keillor, died Friday at her home in Brooklyn Park, her son said in a news release. She was 97.

"Mother had a good long life and was still lucid a couple weeks ago, and even had a good laugh about a dream she had had," Garrison Keillor wrote in the release. "She died in the house Dad built in 1947, with her children around her holding her hand and singing hymns."

Grace Denham, one of 13 children of Scottish immigrants, was born in Minneapolis in 1915. She grew up on Longfellow Avenue in the Powderhorn neighborhood, attended Roosevelt High School, trained as a nrse and went to work at the former Eitel Hospital in Minneapolis.

She was married in 1936 to John Keillor, who had courted her by singing hymns with the word "grace" in the title, the news release said. They attended the Grace & Truth Gospel Hall on 14th Avenue S. John went in the Army in 1942 and Grace and her three children lived with various relatives in St. Paul, Bettendorf, Iowa, and Anoka.

Grace Denham, one of 13 children of Scottish immigrants, was born in Minneapolis in 1915. She grew up on Longfellow Avenue in the Powderhorn neighborhood, attended Roosevelt High School, trained as a nurse and went to work at the former Eitel Hospital in Minneapolis.

"Throughout her life, when adversity hit, my mother was strong, determined and persevering," her daughter Linda Berg of Minneapolis said in the news release. "She did what had to be done -- whether it was selling cookies door to door during the Depression, learning how to plant a garden or caring for a very sick husband. Besides her sense of fun and her love of family, what sustained Grace through good times and bad was her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. ... She loved having children. And when times were tough, she sheltered us from the fact that we were living life sometimes at the very edge. When John suffered a severe concussion after falling off a barn roof and when he battled spinal meningitis and some of her younger children had to move in with relatives, she painted it all as if it was going to be an adventure."

After her husband's service in World War II, he bought an acre of cornfield in Brooklyn Park, a stone's throw from the Mississippi, and built a white frame house on it. They raised six children in that house.

John Keillor died in 2001, after 65 years of marriage. Grace lived on in the house, entertaining her family, playing Scrabble, reading, singing hymns and praying for her loved ones, her children said.

In addition to Garrison and Linda, she is survived by another daughter, Judith Locke of Greenville, S.C.; two other sons, Steven of Askov, Minn., and Stanley of Mendota Heights; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. One son, John Philip Jr., preceded her in death.

Services will be private.

Samsung: Galaxy S III's universal search function 'inadvertently removed', will return to UK models in the next few days

After being unceremoniously stripped in a recent OTA update, Samsung has told TechRadar that the Galaxy S III's universal search function will return -- at least in the UK. A spokesperson for Samsung said that the "inadvertent removal" will be remedied in the "correct software upgrade" over the next few days. It sends a mixed message on why the feature was removed in the first place -- and makes us wonder whether the search box will ever return to the Sprint iteration any time soon. Still, it's good news for anyone that's having trouble keeping tabs on all those Angry Birds iterations. Gotta finish 'em all.

US slams deteriorating human rights in China

US officials and lawmakers took aim at China Wednesday, saying human rights were deteriorating in the communist-run nation as Chinese leaders move to quash even the slightest sign of dissent.

"The overall situation of human rights in China continues to deteriorate," said Michael Posner, assistant secretary of state for human rights, after two days of talks with Chinese officials in Washington.

While he praised China's rapid growth which has lifted "hundreds of millions... out of poverty," Posner also stressed "that political reforms in China have not kept pace with economic advances."

Chinese people needed to be able to voice legitimate grievances and play a "meaningful role in the political development of their own society," he said.

During the talks with the Chinese side, led by Chen Xu, a director general from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US also raised the issue of China's crackdown on the Uighurs, as well as the self-immolations by about 40 Tibetans.

The US delegation also raised concerns about freedom of expression, including Internet freedom, labor rights and legal reforms.

"Lawyers, bloggers, NGO activists, journalists, religious leaders and others are asserting universal rights and calling for peaceful reform in China," Posner told reporters.

"We strongly believe as change occurs within a society these discussions... are ultimately about Chinese aspirations and how the Chinese themselves are navigating their own future."

US officials voiced concern about the lack of access to legal counsel for detained activists, and again called for the release of lawyers and democracy activists languishing in jail, including Nobel peace laureate Liu Xiaobo.

They also raised the cases of prominent Chinese rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who has been held virtually incommunicado since 2009, and wheelchair-bound Ni Yulan, who was jailed after working with her husband to protect alleged victims of government-backed land grabs.

The US delegation comprised representatives from across the administration, including from the justice department, USAID, trade representatives and national security staff.

Posner dismissed suggestions that the regular US-China human rights dialogue was of little use since conditions were not improving on the ground.

"I think over time we're responding to a very heartfelt desire by people living in China... that their cases, their issues not be forgotten. We're amplifying their voices, in effect," he told journalists.

US lawmakers also took Beijing to task for its "deplorable" human rights record at a hearing in Congress, while advocates called on President Barack Obama to personally engage with the Chinese on rights cases.

Four human rights defenders, including Chinese Uighur rights defender Rebiya Kadeer, testified to the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the deteriorating conditions in China and Tibet.

"Chinese authorities remain hyper-vigilant about tamping down anything that smacks of political or social dissent, including criticism of the government and exposure of official wrongdoing," Howard Berman, the committee's ranking Democrat, told the hearing.

Dissident Chen Guangcheng, who arrived in the United States in mid-May, had been due to testify, but later declined apparently out of fear of reprisal against relatives back in China.

The 40-year-old activist, jailed for four years for exposing abuses under China's one-child policy, escaped from house arrest in April just as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was visiting Beijing, sparking a major diplomatic incident.

While some of the advocates said such forums as the US-China dialogue on human rights were vital to keep pressure up on Beijing, they all called for the White House to do more.

"At the highest levels it has not been a priority," Jared Genser, founder of US-based non-profit group Freedom Now, told lawmakers.

"President Obama and Secretary Clinton must personally engage on Chinese human rights cases and make full use of the bully pulpit, something they have only done to date on rare occasions," he added.

"China's backsliding on rights should have long since merited a change in tactics and a more proactive and public approach."

Cheap Ways On How To Improve Your House ? Free Article Directory

You should always purchase the materials you need for home improvement projects in the largest possible lots. Building materials have some of the deepest volume discounts you will ever see. By planning ahead you can figure out how much material you are likely to need and buy it all at once. This will cost you much less than making multiple purchases.

When a home improvement project includes landscaping working, attention should be given to drainage in order to avoid standing water anywhere on the property. Standing water looks bad, hurts grass and can even pose a health hazard if it attracts insects. Every point on a property should either be sloped for good drainage or equipped with alternative drains.

If you are going to do home improvements for family members or friends and are not insured to do the repairs you may want to think long and hard before doing the repairs. You can not see extensive damage behind walls and you could be setting yourself up for a lawsuit if you are not able to properly fix the repair after you have started.

For an unique designer look on your walls, try a multi-textured look using flat and glossy paints tinted the same shade. First apply two coats of flat paint all over the walls, then use the glossy paint to stencil or freehand designs over the top of it. The glossy paint will reflect light, providing subtle visual interest.

Don?t hire a contractor until you find out if they?re insured! This is a sure sign of a trustworthy contractor who is prepared to complete the home improvements you required, and that they?re not a scam artist who will take your money and run.

When painting a room it is important to make sure to have proper ventilation. If a room is not moving the air properly it can lead to difficulty breathing. You should keep a window open while you are painting a room so that you can be certain that the air is circulating.

Freshen up your kitchen with flowers and fruit. A beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers or a bowl of brightly colored fruit will perk up any kitchen. This is an inexpensive fix and will brighten up the kitchen instantly. Seeing a vase of fresh flowers on even the dullest of days will instantly improve both the kitchen and your mood!

When tackling a home improvement venture on your own, you need to have a reliable place that you go to get advice. If you find random information on the internet from some John Doe, you could be headed towards disaster! Large scale home improvement stores are never a bad place to start.

If you have an extensive collection of collectibles or figurines, keep what you display to a minimum. Trying to display everything in one room or area can make your space appear cluttered. Choose a few focal pieces, about 5 pieces at the most and arrange them in a pleasing manner.

Free up some cabinet space in your kitchen by using a metal desk organizer to store cutting boards, jelly roll pans and cookie sheets. This will not only give you the much needed cabinet space, but keep you from having to open every single drawer in your kitchen to find one item you could use.

Home improvements can be a lot of fun when you do it yourself. Make them more enjoyable by having a positive attitude and enjoying the job along the way. Take before and after photos to show your friends and family what you did as the job progressed and feel the pride of doing it yourself.

If you have an elderly parent living in your home, you need to plan home improvements and renovations with an eye to mobility, safety, and accessibility. A step-in shower stall, for example, is much easier to access and reduces the risk of slipping. Simple changes such as grab bars can make your home more comfortable and safer for your parent as well.

The most annoying thing in your home is a stuck window. You can easily fix your problem with a little bit of silicone spray lubricant. Spray some lubricant onto an old cloth or rag and wipe it along the sliding tracks. The spray will help lubricate the tracks which in turn make your window easier to open and close.

Home improvement can be very rewarding, but it can also be a lot of work. Regardless, if you know what to do and how to properly and safely improve your home, you can create the house of your dreams. So, do yourself a favor by doing your research and applying the above tips to your home improvement.

Nominalizations Are Zombie Nouns ? Splat Kerplunk!

Helen Sword

Helen Sword has a great article over at the New York Times about the use of nominalizations ? which she says ? cannibalize active verbs, suck the lifeblood from adjectives and substitute abstract entities for human beings?.

She goes on to say that she has ?seen academic colleagues become so enchanted by zombie nouns like heteronormativity and interpellation that they forget how ordinary people speak. Their students, in turn, absorb the dangerous message that people who use big words are smarter ? or at least appear to be ? than those who don?t.?

I fall into this trap in my work as a Technical Writer for a software company. I?m sorely tempted to use big, fancy words and long, complex sentences to prove to? my employers that I am worth my salary. But my job requires me to explain technical concepts in the clearest manner possible to ordinary, non-technical? readers. I can?t afford to muddy my message with unnecessary over-complication.

That?s why Helen Sword?s article is a reminder to me ? Keep It Simple, Stupid!

Simple, richly noun-verb driven prose conveys meaning and clarity like a Swarovski crystal champagne flute struck with a silver spoon.

Read more from Helen?s article:

?Nouns formed from other parts of speech are called nominalizations. Academics love them; so do lawyers, bureaucrats and business writers. I call them ?zombie nouns? because they cannibalize active verbs, suck the lifeblood from adjectives and substitute abstract entities for human beings:

The proliferation of nominalizations in a discursive formation may be an indication of a tendency toward pomposity and abstraction.

The sentence above contains no fewer than seven nominalizations, each formed from a verb or an adjective. Yet it fails to tell us who is doing what. When we eliminate or reanimate most of the zombie nouns (tendency becomes tend, abstraction becomes abstract) and add a human subject and some active verbs, the sentence springs back to life:
