The latest from MMA's yentes includes a Bellator championship bout and the debut of a jiu-jitsu pioneer.

-- Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney announced on "MMA Uncensored" that Eric Prindle -- who just won the Bellator heavyweight tournament by Thiago Santos not making weight -- will take on champ Cole Konrad for the title on April 13 in Atlantic City.

-- UFC 145's pay-per-view will feature six main card fights. Miguel Torres' bout with Michael McDonald will now be on on the pay-per-view that will be headlined by Jon Jones putting his belt on the line against Rashad Evans.

-- At UFC 148, Melvin Guillard will try to snap his losing streak against Team Blackhouse fighter Fabricio Camoes. Guillard's last two bouts were first-round losses to Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon, while Camoes is coming off of a submission win over Tom Hayden.

-- Milton Viera, a jiu-jitsu star who is credited for creating the anaconda choke, will make his UFC debut at at UFC 147 in Brazil against Felipe Arantas. (An earlier version of this post said anaconda joke. While it was a typo, it was at least a funny one.)

On the Coexistence of Family, Motherhood, and Art | SANDBOX ...

One can either have great art or great life

I?ve spent seven years meditating on this statement, and I always arrive at the same conclusion: it is true.?

It is true because great art and great life both require great sacrifice and, ultimately, every artist will choose whether it is her art or her life which will give way to make the other preeminent.

Twenty years ago, I would easily have given my life for the sake of making great art. I never dreamed of getting married, having children, or working a ?real? job. Creating in the rehearsal room and performing on the stage were the only places I felt at home, the only spaces where I felt alive. My purpose and passion were completely fulfilled in producing art.

But at the age of twenty, I made a life-altering decision (which I will share in a later post)

that led to me getting married a year later. It quickly became clear that I needed to focus on my marriage if I wanted it to last. So I walked off the stage for a then-undetermined amount of time that turned into five years of wondering if I would ever have another artistic opportunity.

I?ve now been married for almost twelve years, have a 3-year-old daughter, and am about to give birth to a second child this summer. And I am confident that the sacrifice I made at the beginning was more than worth it. My husband and I counsel couples every year, and I am constantly reminded that great marriages require great effort. I can honestly now say that if I never stepped on stage again, but succeeded as a wife and mother, then I would have no regrets.

Yet, I am somehow, still, an artist. As a member of Sandbox Theatre, I get to participate in making great art. I personally am not great, but because I work with an ensemble, because I rely on the collaborative efforts of a group of artists, I still receive the reward of producing excellent, original, inspiring art.

And I can do all this because I have a husband who is willing to make sacrifices for me. My husband understands that I don?t need to create and perform, but that I love doing it, with this company, towards these ends. Sandbox, too, makes sacrifices for me. Sandbox, too, understands that art is my joy but my family is my life, and that I am unwilling to give up this great life for the sake of art.

So, perhaps, one could say that I am unusually blessed to have both great art and great life, the seemingly impossible coexistence of incredibly difficult realities. And it does require daily sacrifices on many sides, from many people. But I think that this group effort towards greatness, in life and in art, is what makes both so very beautiful. Neither life nor art was ever intended to exist alone.??

Prince of Persia and Karateka, were two of the best action games of their era. Why? Because they gave us an inkling of what real, fluid graphical motion would look like in a few years' time and, more important, were pretty much amazing if you were used to the Atari 2600 and River Raid. I remember playing Karateka before school at age ten, chopping my way through enemies on my way to save my sweetie and then, a few years later, playing PoP. Both were amazing. Why? Because he created smooth, believable animation at eight frames per second on machines that were more suited to games like The Oregon Trail. He also created action games that led to realistic titles like Tekken that used real, human motion in order to add amazing realism. A funny thing happened about ten years ago. The creator of these games, Jordan Mechner, apparently lost the original PoP source code and hunted all over for it, asking former Broderbund employees and digging through old files. The files - stored on 3.5-inch floppy disks - contained the original machine code for the game. The only way to actually play the game, until today, was run an emulated, extracted ROM.

Early buzz out of Sundance is overwhelmingly positive, and the film could prove to have crossover between critics and the key demographic of young men.

A remake of a ?08 French film, ?LOL? promises to be an ultra-contemporary coming-of-age flick, with Miley Cyrus sowing her oats as a young girl coping with break-ups and mommy issues. Squarely targeted at the texting generation, the film also stars ?Twilight? alum Ashley Greene, and it?s backed by new ?Hunger Games? super-studio, Lionsgate. If nothing else, fans will want to catch Cyrus behaving badly, in the film that cut pot-smoking scenes after related video of the starlet circulated two years back.

USA (MNN) -- Times have changed in the adoption world, and Buckner International has watched it happen.

Since 1984, Buckner has been placing children into adoptive families has seen changes in adoption trends over the years, particularly in the last 4 decades.

Since the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade in 1974, domestic infant adoptions have declined. There are more options available for single women who are pregnant today, says Carol Demuth, adoption supervisor for Buckner.

"Single parenthood is more acceptable," says Demuth. "There is less shame associated with getting pregnant as a single person. It's definitely changed the reasons why birth mothers place their children for adoption. Now, it's because they prefer their child to be raised in a two-parent home and they truly care for their child's future, not because they are ashamed."

As a result of this change in particular, Buckner has seen a dramatic drop in domestic adoptions. In 1996, Buckner assisted in 25 to 30 domestic infant adoptions annually. By 2011, that number had dwindled to five.

With domestic infant adoptions on the decline, more families are turning to alternative adoption options. One significant trend, Buckner reports, has been in the number of families adopting through foster care. In fact, from 1997 to 2000, there was a 65% increase in U.S. foster care adoptions.

More and more families are choosing this option for various reasons. For one thing, it's a much cheaper alternative to international adoption. Adoption through the foster care system is usually free after state reimbursements and tax credits are applied.

But finances are hardly the only reason for this trend. It's becoming increasingly acceptable for families with biological children to grow their families with adopted foster children, notes Buckner. Buckner has seen numerous single moms adopt this way, too. Even "empty nesters" who have the resources to start a family a second time are adopting.

Adopting this way is risky business. Foster care is intended to reunite children with birth parents, and families wishing to adopt can have their hearts broken. But families who do so are helping to meet a serious need. About 130,000 foster children are waiting nationwide for forever families.

Whatever the reasons for the trend, it is undoubtedly a good thing. A serious need is being met, and children who may never otherwise know the love of the Lord are being surrounded by godly and loving families. Ibuprofen reduces altitude sickness, US study says

The anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen can reduce acute altitude sickness suffered by a quarter of the millions of Americans who travel to the mountains to ski or hike, according to a clinical study published Tuesday.

Grant Lipman, the Stanford University researcher who led the study, described altitude sickness as being like "a really nasty hangover."

The symptoms include headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and poor appetite.

In the worst cases, altitude sickness can cause cerebral edema, an often fatal brain swelling.

Ibuprofen, an active ingredient in over-the-counter painkillers like Advil, reduced altitude sickness symptoms by 26 percent in a study of 58 men and 28 women, Lipman and his research team reported.

The study was published in the online version of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

The study participants traveled to an area of the White Mountains northeast of Bishop, California, where they spent the night at 4,100 feet.

At 8 am, they were given either 600 milligrams of ibuprofen or a placebo before heading up a mountain to a staging area at 11,700 feet. There, they were given a second dose at 2 pm.

They then hiked to 12,570 feet, where they received a third dose at 8 pm before spending the night on the mountain.

Of the 44 participants who received ibuprofen, 19, or 43 percent, suffered symptoms of altitude sickness, whereas 29 of the 42 participants who received placebos had symptoms, according to the study.

In other words, ibuprofen reduced the incidence of the illness by 26 percent, the report said.

Among study participants who suffered altitude sickness, symptoms were less severe in the persons who took ibuprofen, the researchers reported.

At high altitudes, decreased atmospheric pressure reduces oxygen molecules in the air, making it harder for people to breathe.

Some researchers believe altitude sickness occurs because a lack of oxygen to the brain causes it to swell with fluids. Ibuprofen appears to reduce the swelling, according to the Stanford researchers.

Other altitude sickness drugs are available, such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone, but they can have more undesirable side effects than ibuprofen, according to the researchers.

Ibuprofen's milder side effects can include the possibility of gastrointestinal and kidney problems in people who are dehydrated, the researchers said.
