Romo gets paid

Philadelphia Eagles v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

Given Friday?s events, it?s clear that the suggestion that the Cowboys couldn?t have used the franchise tag on Tony Romo in 2014 came from the Romo camp as part of an effort to break whatever final hurdle(s) existed between the team and the player.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it never was going to be issue.

The glitch that would have resulted in the final years of Romo?s contract voiding after the window for using the franchise tag had closed came, we?re told, from a deal that was done in 2011 to help create cap space.? At that time, Romo, the Cowboys, and his agents agreed to commence the process to make Romo a Cowboy for life, and to get it done before the start of the final season of his current contract.

In the end, Romo was never going to leave the Cowboys.? So it didn?t matter if there was no franchise tag to be used.

?Tony has a special relationship with Jerry [Jones], Stephen [Jones], and the Cowboys organization.? The parties truly view it as a long-term partnership and they truly trust each other,? the source said.? ?Tony values being a Cowboy for life.?

Moreover, the guaranteed money in the new Romo deal ($55.5 million) hints that the franchise-tag formula was a factor in the negotiations.? With a salary of $11.5 million in 2013 and franchise-tag numbers of $20.16 million and $24.19 million, respectively, in 2014 and 2015, Romo would have made $55.85 million over the next three years, if he had gone one year at a time under the franchise tag.

Either way, the Cowboys have gone all in with Romo.? Today?s deal simply puts even more chips in the middle of the table.

Obama to pitch more jobs in public works in Miami

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will promote a plan to create jobs by attracting private investment in highways and other public works during a visit Friday to a Miami port, the White House said.

The president will flesh out details of his proposals in a speech at the port, which is undergoing $2 billion in upgrades paid for with government and private money. Obama, in the quick trip to South Florida, will try to show that the economy remains his top priority in the midst of high-profile campaigns on immigration reform and gun control.

Among the proposals Obama will call for:

?Higher caps on "private activity bonds" to encourage more private spending on highways and other infrastructure projects. State and local governments use the bonds to attract investment.

?Giving foreign pension funds tax-exempt status when selling U.S. infrastructure, property or real estate assets. U.S. pension funds are generally tax exempt in those circumstances. The administration says some international pension funds cite the tax burden as a reason for not investing in American infrastructure.

?$4 billion in new spending on two infrastructure programs that award loans and grants.

?A renewed call for a $10 billion national "infrastructure bank" ? a proposal from his first term that gained little traction.

The president made private-sector infrastructure investment a key part of the economic agenda he rolled out in his State of the Union address last month. He also called in his address for a "Fix-It-First" program that would spend $40 billion in taxpayer funds on urgent repairs.

Obama's focus on generating more private sector investment underscores the tough road new spending faces on Capitol Hill, where Republican lawmakers often threaten to block additional spending unless it is paid for by tax cuts or other measures.

Any increased spending associated with the proposals Obama was outlining Friday would not add to the deficit, a senior administration official said. The official was not authorized to discuss the plan in advance of Obama's announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The official did not detail how the costs would be paid for, saying only that more information would be included in the president's budget.

Obama will release his budget April 10.

Do You Really Need an SEO Expert for your Local Business Website?

This article aims to provide valuable information that will help small business owners to leverage the benefits of launching their business online. Is it really easy for them to handle their business and online stuff together? Well? I would say it?s not that easy, though it?s not that much harder as well!

Starting a local business and expecting local customers from offline marketing techniques like word of mouth publicity, local daily ads and other offline stuff is understandable but running your business online and targeting customers and sales on the web is another thing and it requires special tactics. I am going to explain some of those tactics in this article that will give you immense knowledge, confidence and determination to get started with your business online.

Steps to put your business online:

  1. The foremost step is to have a neat and clean website depicting your business specifications and services. Many a times I have seen people giving not much preference to the design of the website and that results in a shady image online. You can easily find information regarding how to create a website on Google. I would suggest that you hire a web designer to do that task for you. Just book a nice domain name for your website and book a hosting space from a credible hosting provider. This is a simple and common thing which many small business owners do not tend to focus on ? so make sure you get your basics right.
  2. Once your website is ready online, let?s get started with local SEO or in other words, local promotion within and nearby your area. To begin with, create an account on Google Places to list your business online. You can visit www.google.com/places and sign in with your Gmail account details.
  3. Once you are on the listing page, you will need to enter information like company name, address, website URL, phone numbers and other things. Make sure you enter all the information correctly. Google will then verify your information through a telephone call before creating map listing of your company. This process may take couple of weeks. You can also do a basic yahoo directory listing as per your category and?geographic location.
    image002
  4. Once placement of your business on Google Places is done, it is your job to encourage your current customers to take out some time to visit your Google Places profile and provide honest reviews about your products and services. A Google Places account with customer reviews stands ahead of your competitors and also instills a sense of credibility and reliability in new potential customers.
  5. The next step is to collate a list of local business websites wherein you can enter your company details. Some useful local business websites can be Yellow Pages, Craigslist, SuperPages, Insider Pages, and others. These websites will help spread your company?s presence online. Make sure you are mentioning your company address and phone numbers in all these local websites so that the potential customer can easily contact or reach you.
  6. You should keep your website up-to-date with all the information you want to pass on to your customers. Outdated websites tend to get lost in the overcrowded online marketplace.
  7. Do not forget to make your presence social through social media websites, as they prove to be a real destination to get targeted customers for your products or services. I would say this is the perfect platform to show the USP of your company and the products you offer. You can create your company pages on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and other social networking websites and showcase your products and special festive deals, if any. Doing regular updates of your social accounts with special deals will attract hoards of people to like your page and to become your ultimate customers.
  8. If you have a product-based business, then you can tie up with other e-commerce websites to list your products as such e-commerce or shopping websites have gigantic traffic that gives you a good chance to reap good amount product sales. This will further help in generating company awareness among the populace.
  9. You can also leverage classified ad websites like eBay, Craigslist and others to sell your products. It may require more time than you expected to create and maintain these accounts and that could become a problem for you. Later on, you?ll be able to afford a dedicated person who will do the marketing for you through classified ad websites.

I do not think that the above mentioned points require much money and time to give a real boost to your online business. I haven?t mentioned any technicalities whatsoever such as On-Site Optimization, Search Engine Optimization, Paid Advertising and so on. Google can make things happen in two ways ? simple way or the technical way!

Let?s first get started with the simple way and when you will get time and money for the resources, you can always go for the technical method.

Conclusion

If you are one of those small business owners who think that you need to hire an SEO expert to bring your business online, will you will at least ?forget that perception and give this a try yourself?

UK carrier Three is in 'no rush' to active LTE, probably won't do so until Q4

Three's CEO could teach Vodafone's CEO a thing or two about diplomacy. Whereas Vittorio Colao dismissed British LTE users as "technofreaks", Dave Dyson has merely said that he's "fairly relaxed" about upgrading Three's network. During a quarterly earnings report yesterday, he said he's in "no rush for LTE" and told people not to expect Three's newly acquired chunks of LTE spectrum to be brought to life until Q4 of this year. He intends to wait and see how O2 and Vodafone position themselves, and that's fine -- just so long as he sticks to the earlier promise not to charge extra for unlimited LTE data.

Colorado Veteran Finds Better Sleep With Donation of Easy Rest Adjustable Bed

Prior to receiving his Easy Rest Adjustable Bed, Army Corporal Nicholas Orchowski suffered from insomnia, muscle spasms and had a hard time finding comfort at night. Now, he?s not waking up as frequently and he?s getting a longer, deeper sleep that allows him to feel more rested in the morning.

Baltimore, Maryland (PRWEB) March 27, 2013

Army Corporal Nicholas Orchowski was only averaging four hours of sleep a night and had trouble finding comfort in bed after suffering a debilitating injury in Baghdad, Iraq nine years ago. Now, thanks to the donation of an Easy Rest Adjustable Bed, he?s enjoying a deeper, more solid sleep and he?s waking up feeling better rested, and with improved leg circulation, thanks to his new bed.

?My wife and I are both getting better sleep,? said Cpl. Orchowski. ?With this bed it?s easier to get and stay comfortable and I?m not waking up as much to change positions during the night. Since receiving my Easy Rest Adjustable Bed I?m averaging a solid seven hours of sleep a night.?

Cpl. Orchowski served as a Military Police Officer in Baghdad in 2004. That May he was part of a mission to pick up firearms and ammunition for a new unit that was coming into Iraq. Cpl. Orchowski was assigned to be the gunner of the lead Humvee providing security for the convoy. During the drive between bases, his Humvee was hit head-on by a dump truck filled with bricks, loose rocks and explosives. The Humvee was blown into pieces and he was thrown from the vehicle. He broke several vertebrae in his back, shattered his right elbow, tore the patellar tendon in his right leg and suffered a traumatic brain injury. His injuries left him paralyzed from the neck down.

After being stabilized in the field, Cpl. Orchowski was flown to Landstuhl, Germany for the first of many surgeries and was quickly transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He spent three months there before moving to the VA Spinal Cord Injury Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After countless surgeries, and a great deal of therapy, he has regained some function in his legs and left arm and is considered an incomplete quadriplegic. Today he is walking with the use of braces and uses a wheelchair occasionally. He has not regained the use of his right arm but he is still fighting to strengthen his body.

?We are thrilled to be able to help Cpl. Orchowski achieve a better night?s sleep with an Easy Rest Adjustable Bed,? said Jeff Mowrey, Chief Operating Officer for the Company. ?He has given so much in service to our Country and it?s an honor to be able to thank him in this way. That's why we created the Beds For Our Troops Program.?

When asked what he thought was the beds best features Cpl. Orchowski didn?t hesitate with his answer. ?The ability to adjust the head and foot of the bed and the massage features are the best benefits for me,? he stated. ?No more using 20 pillows to find a comfortable position. And the massage is awesome and relaxing. My kids love that feature the most. We get into bed as a family and turn the massage motors on and it knocks the kids right out,? he added happily.

Cpl. Orchowski lives in Parker, Colorado with his wife and two daughters. He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys participating in adaptive skiing, hunting and fishing programs.

The Four Elements of Physical Energy and How To Master Them

The Four Elements of Physical Energy and How To Master Them"Manage your energy, not your time." This is the quote that made Tony Schwartz famous. And it's one that I believe best represents a truly efficient lifestyle in the 21st century. Yet, living "manage your energy, not your time" is incredibly hard, at least for me. It probably took me around a year to fully grasp its meaning. Since then, I've turned my life upside down and changed my routine dramatically.

As one example, at Buffer, we use an informal line to help us make better decisions. It goes something like this: "Working more is never the answer." Whenever we are struggling under more workload, the first thing is to stop what we're doing and think about a better way to manage our energy, not to add more work hours to our day. Schwartz famously proclaims in his book that most of us are chasing the wrong resource: hours in the day. Instead, we should focus on something entirely different: our energy.

Our energy can be broken down in 4 different elements:

  • Your physical energy?how healthy are you?
  • Your emotional energy?how happy are you?
  • Your mental energy?how well can you focus on something?
  • Your spiritual energy?why are you doing all of this? What is your purpose?

The order of how these energies are written down is not random, by the way. Tony gives them this specific order to guide us through developing our energies in the right way. And in doing so, your physical energy comes first because it's naturally our base and foundation for any other energy or focus we want to develop.

So for this article, I wanted to break down all elements of physical energy as our most important foundation. Let's dig in:

Your Physical Energy: How Healthy Are You?

Your physical energy naturally serves as the base, says Schwarz. It's going to be very tough to build out your other energies without taking care of your body first. What's most interesting is that up until now, our physical energy is the most discounted element in our day to day lives.

To break it down further, how you arrive at optimal physical energy is through these 4 elements:

Nutrition: Do You Keep a Sustainable Glucose Level in Your Blood Stream?

We've talked before about the importance of nutrition when it comes to productivity. After all, nutrition is your fuel. And yet, so many of us gravely neglect what we eat every day. Here is a typical graph of our glucose level, showing the difference between eating more sugar and less. From first sight it's clear that most of us base too much of our diet on the three big meal times throughout the day and get a similar spiky pattern of ups and downs:

The Four Elements of Physical Energy and How To Master Them

To optimize the graph, I picked out three of the most important parts to get your nutrition back to the level it might have once been:

Reorganize how food is stored in your cupboard. Researcher Brian Wansink demonstrated in a surprising experiment that "you are three times more likely to eat the first thing you see in your cupboard than the fifth thing you see." Put the healthy things in reach and the not so healthy ones out of it.

Carbohydrates in the morning, fat and protein in the evening. This is something bodybuilders have been practicing for a long time and I believe it applies equally for anyone trying to gain more energy. When learning to better manage your energy level, one of the most important things is to respect your catabolic and anabolic cycles. Giving your body carbohydrates (energy) in the morning will give you all the fuel. Moving more towards protein and fat in the evening so your body can refuel overnight is equally important.

Doing nothing else when eating food. It seems such a fitting experience to watch TV, work, read, or do anything else but solely focusing on eating when we eat. Funnily enough, it almost appears to be a waste of time if we "just eat." The latest research on multitasking, however, reveals the exact opposite. Solely focusing on eating doesn't just help you digest your food better, it also makes you a more efficient worker for any other tasks.

Fitness: How Well Do You Transport Oxygen Through Your Body?

The second element of great physical energy is how fit you are. Meaning, how much oxygen your blood stream can transport at any given time. And working on your fitness level doesn't just come with great health benefits. It can serve as the most important element to change your life into the one you want.

Out of all possible habits and routines, the gym habit is by far the most powerful one, writes Charles Duhigg in The Power of Habit. The reason is simple: Going to the gym creates something called a "cornerstone habit." That means you can build any other habit you want around this habit. After you have a consistent fitness habit, you're basically ready to tackle any other challenge much more easily.

In a powerful post from Leo Babauta, he addresses the 15 most common excuses to form a gym habit and how to work against them. Here are my three favorite ones:

"I don't have the time." That is by far the number one excuse. And yet, the problem is often the fear of having to start a five-days-a-week bodybuilding workout. "Do 5 minutes a day. You can squeeze 5 minutes of brisk walking into your busy schedule," says Leo.

"My family isn't supportive." This is one of the toughest ones Leo talks about. His insight to overcoming it is to tell your family early on: "One of my favorite tactics is getting my family on board early-before I've decided to make a change, when I'm still thinking about it. I send them articles I'm reading, talk to them about things I've learned, why this is important to me, etc. Then when I'm ready to make a decision to change, I ask for their help deciding?and then their help implementing."

"I'm not good at it." Another key excuse Leo mentions is this one, fortunately: "No one is good at it when they start out. Everyone has to learn, everyone starts somewhere. You get good at it by doing it. Here, especially using the Tiny Habits method can help tremendously. And as the last help with this, exercising also makes us happier.

Sleep: Do You Sleep Enough to Renew Your Body?

We've talked in depth about how much sleep you really need to renew your body overnight. And one of the key elements I keep coming back to myself is to focus on both light sleep and deep sleep. Here is an outline from sleep tracking app Zeo on how the average data on sleeping for its users looks like:

The Four Elements of Physical Energy and How To Master Them

What's most interesting to know if your amount of sleep drops below the above mentioned level is this: the research on sleep shows that it changes our cognitive functions entirely: "Working overtime doesn't increase your output. It makes you stupid." The problem with not getting enough sleep is quite simply that we don't know we aren't getting enough. And the consequences can cost us dearly. What I've personally started to experiment with, together with the whole Buffer team is to start tracking our sleep with the Jawbone UP fuelband.

The Four Elements of Physical Energy and How To Master ThemIt's been an amazing help to get better sleep, and to know if you're getting the right kind of sleep. What I tried to optimize over the past few days was the amount of deep sleep I'm getting every night. The reason for this is that deep sleep serves as the most important element in your sleeping phase for renewing your brain cells and body cells. I'll definitely have to do a more in depth article about my findings here. For now, here is my best sleep pattern yet (pictured at right), where I got over four hours of deep sleep.

Renewal: Renewing Your Energy Levels Within the Day

Tony Schwartz talks about this last part as one of the most overlooked elements of our lives: renewal that we get throughout our day. Yes, that's right, if you are anything like me, that's probably the last thing anyone does and yet, it couldn't be any more important. Fittingly, he mentions that even the fastest racing car couldn't win the race without at least one or two great pit stops. The same holds true for ourselves. If we don't have "pit stops" built into our days, there is now chance we can race at a high performance. To better manage your renewal throughout the day, here are a few quick ideas to help you get started:

Take a nap, every day. Being able to nap is the most important part for getting daily renewal in. NYT best selling author Michael Hyatt puts it best in his article about napping recounting his predecessor: "Every day after lunch, I lie down on the sofa in my office, I hold my car keys in my right hand and let my hand hang toward the floor. When the car keys fall out of my hand, I know I'm done."

Build a reading habit. Almost everyone I know wants to spend more time reading, and yet no one seems to find the time for it. Personally, I've recently started to build a daily reading habit of just 30 minutes in, straight after lunch. This is a time where you are likely not going to be very productive, so it's a great way to catch up and get daily renewal.

Develop a meditation habit. Another fantastic way to get more renewal throughout the day is to develop a meditation habit. Around 6 months ago, I started to first incorporate mediation in my daily routine and I've stuck with it ever since. The best way I found to get started was through an amazing app called HeadSpace. It solved the big problem of not knowing how to get started with meditation.

'I felt pure joy': New Jersey Powerball winner confirmed

The $338 million Powerball jackpot winner steps forward to claim his prize. NBC News' Chris Clackum reports.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Pedro Quezada, a?44-year-old father of five,?has 338 million reasons to smile.?

The New Jersey convenience store owner beamed as state lottery officials declared him the winner of the fourth-largest jackpot in Powerball history at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon and presented him with a monster yellow check.

?I felt pure joy,? Quezada said through a translator on Tuesday.

He?s already shut down the store he used to have to wake up at 5 a.m. to open, he said.

A share of his sudden windfall will go toward helping his family, Quezada said.

?My family is a very humble family and we?re going to help each other out,? he said.

?I?m going to help a lot of people, whatever they need,? he told the New York Daily News earlier.

Excitement grew around Quezada?s self-proclaimed win after lottery officials confirmed on Monday that the winning ticket in the $338 million Powerball jackpot was sold at the liquor store in Passaic.

The winners in Saturday night?s drawing were: 17, 29, 31, 52, 53, and the Powerball number, 31.

On Monday, the New Jersey man ran into Eagle Liquors to get his Powerball ticket scanned by store owner Sammy Sethi.?

Pedro Quedaza, an immigrant who came to New Jersey 26 years ago, accepted his $338 million Powerball jackpot Tuesday, saying he'll use the money to care for his family. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Quezada, who is originally from the Dominican Republic and has been in the United States for 26 years, saw the message come up that people in 42 states were hoping for: ?Jackpot!?

The first thing he did was call his wife with the good news.

?I had no words,? she said of hearing her husband had won. ?My heart wanted to come out of my chest. I had no words.?

Reporters and photographers packed into Eagle Liquors on Monday after hearing that Quezada was there, even before lottery officials had confirmed the newly minted millionaire, who used to play the lottery two or three times a week.

His life will change ?but it will not change my heart,? Quezada said of his new fortune

Quezada lives with his wife and children in an apartment facing a highway. And his neighbors weren?t waiting on state authorities to confirm the news before they started congratulating Quezada.

?This is super for all of us on this block,? neighbor Eladia Vazquez told NBC New York. ?They deserve it because they are hardworking people.?

Review: Brain Age: Concentration Training

Developer: Nintendo

Publisher: Nintendo

Platform: 3DS (retail and eShop)

Release Date: February 10, 2013

ESRB: E for Everyone

Growing up, I can't say I've ever said, "Hm... I wonder what age my brain is..." But then Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day came along for the Nintendo DS and the question suddenly made sense to ask. With so many mind-boggling exercises, that game uses your results to determine what your ?brain age? is, which in turn pushes you to do better and better as you train your brain every day. Then came its sequel, Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day, and my brain basically became a 20-year-old on steroids.

It?s been about 6 years since the last main Brain Age game was released to give our brains what-for, and with the Nintendo 3DS out and about, it?s about time we got another mind gym, don?t you think? Dr. Ryuta Kawashima thought so too, and so it?s time to train our brains even harder than before with Brain Age: Concentration Training. With Dr. Kawashima?s new ?Devilish Training? regimen, among other things, never has my brain been pushed so far beyond its limits. But it?s so worth it, and while there may be a few noticeable flaws during your training, the end result of your daily workout will have you concentrating better than you ever thought possible.

Posted Image

Our favorite disembodied head-with-hands Dr. Kawashima is back for another round of brain training. Only this time, the game has changed. Rather than taking your typical Brain Age exercises, Brain Age: Concentration Training is all about the good doctor?s new brain training regimen: Devilish Training. This new technique of his is specially designed to train your working memory ? that grey area of your brain where you store temporary information that you use immediately, such as following instructions. By training every day, Dr. Kawashima promises an improvement in the executive (used to do work), suppressive (used for self-control), and prediction/judgment functions of your brain.

Whenever you begin your daily Devilish Training, Dr. Kawashima gets a little bit on the dark side as he turns red and grows horns to become a highly-educated Lucifer. This emphasis on devilish themes is due to the extreme challenge this new brain training technique presents. There?s a reason these exercises have to be so devilishly tricky, though. Training your brain is one thing, but improving your working memory takes a serious amount of concentration. Especially in modern times, where much of society is suffering from Information Addiction, in which the conveniences of modern technology erode our ability to focus on the task at hand.

Of course, this constant hunger for information isn?t the only distraction in the world we live in, but regardless of where your distractions are coming from, Devilish Training will have you concentrating harder than ever as your working memory improves, whether you?re dealing with numbers, words, or...mice. Take it from me; I started writing this review day one of playing the game because the game made me want to write it immediately. This level of effectiveness is a devilish Godsend as I have always wanted something that could help me concentrate on my work.

Posted Image

Aside from Devilish Training, this game also offers two other training programs ? Brain Training and Supplemental Training. In fact, I recommend jumping into these before your Devilish Training session, as Brain Training works on keeping your brain active while Supplemental Training challenges the speed of your working memory. By doing these two beforehand, I found that my performance in the big training session of the day improved quicker than if I skipped them. There is also Relaxation Mode, which is a great way to relax your brain after it melts from all the stress it endured through various activities, and Concentration Challenge, which is a sort of way to challenge your working memory and see how much the game is helping your concentration.

The game is fairly straightforward, since the majority of the game involves writing numbers and letters and tapping on things. Unfortunately, not everything you do is coherent to the game, which can get extremely frustrating. For example, the way I write the letter ?P? doesn?t seem to register with the game, and sometimes when you write a certain number, the game reads it as something else. In fact, it?s pretty easy to cheat sometimes by simply writing a squiggly line and letting the game determine it as the correct answer. This stuff doesn?t happen all of the time, but it?s noticeable when it does and kinda hurts the effectiveness of the otherwise fantastic training program.

Posted Image

The graphics and art style in Concentration Training are about what you would expect from a Brain Age title, only slightly better than what you?ve seen in the past due to the transition onto the 3DS. There are some nice charts, graphs, and various pictures displayed during things like Brain Seminars that look nice. And the minimalism of most of the game?s exercises makes it easy to participate without getting distracted by flashy 3D effects. There are a few exercises that take advantage of the 3DS?s signature effect, though, such as one involving numbered balls under some cups. Then, of course, there?s the doctor himself, who doesn?t hesitate to show how well the game pulls the effect off whenever utilized.

Music isn?t exactly the main focus of the Brain Age series, but that doesn?t mean Concentration Training can?t have a decent soundtrack. While the majority of the game has you listening to the sounds of silence as you concentrate hard to get through your exercises, the music you do hear isn?t bad at all. You?ll hear tunes during Dr. Kawashima?s Brain Seminars, Brain News, and when simply viewing the menu screen.

Then there are things like varying sound effects, jingles, a remix of a Dr. Mario song, and a Brain Training exercise called Piano Player that has you playing classical compositions on a virtual piano. My personal favorite, though, is Music Appreciation ? a Relaxation Mode activity that simply has you listen to 64 very soothing songs to a slideshow of beautiful photographs, which is meant to calm your brain after exercising (I also use it when I go to sleep now). When listening to all these songs, you come to realize just how wonderful the music in this game is.

A surprisingly good voiceover job is featured in this game as well. Of course, the only voice in the game is of Dr. Kawashima, but his voice actor has done remarkably well. The only downside to the voice is the fact that, well? Dr. Kawashima talks too much. Thanks to his having a voice, he can come off as distracting, ironically. It?s fine when he?s simply giving instructions and giving presentations, but he talks during your exercises too. And whether he tells you good things or says ?whoops? when you make a mistake, his talking can get annoying, which can really break your concentration sometimes.

Posted Image

At the end of the day, Brain Age: Concentration Training is exactly what it sets out to be ? A devilishly tricky game designed to boost brain activity and improve concentration. And as someone who felt a strong urge to start this review after my very first training session, I can vouch for its effectiveness. A flawless 3D effect, a surprisingly good soundtrack, and quality voice acting are just icing on this devilish cake, and while the game has some annoying downsides, the third iteration into the main Brain Age series is one brain-boosting tool you shouldn't miss out on if you want to keep your concentration in check.

Pros:

+ Highly effective in increasing brain activity and boosting concentration

+ 3D effect works flawlessly when taken advantage of

+ Surprisingly good amount of quality music packed in

+ The voice acting for Dr. Kawashima is top-notch

Cons:

- Doesn't understand what you're writing sometimes

- Dr. Kawashima can get annoying and break your concentration

Overall Score: 8 (out of 10)

Great

With Dr. Kawashima's new Devilish Training regimen, Brain Age: Concentration Training does exactly what it tries to do - improve your concentration. If you care about your brain, don't miss this game.

F.A.A. may soon allow iPads to be used during takeoff and landing

You may soon be able to use your iPad on flights during takeoff and landing, as the Federal Aviation Administration is considering loosening restrictions on devices that can be powered on during those times. The list of permitted devices would not include cellphones, and would be restricted to so-called ?reading devices? such as Kindles and iPads, and all devices would be required to be put in airplane mode. A working group is currently studying the issue and hopes to release its results by the end of July, according to Nick Bilton at the New York Times:

Last year, the agency announced that an industry working group would study the issue. The group, which first met in January, comprises people from various industries, including Amazon, the Consumer Electronics Association, Boeing, the Association of Flight Attendants, the Federal Communications Commission and aircraft makers. The group plans to introduce its findings by July 31.

What exactly is meant by ?reading device? isn?t quite clear apart from ereaders. Is an iPad a reading device? You can certainly read on it yes, but does it qualify? Given that airplane crew members are now able to use iPads during takeoff and landing to do their jobs, it seems reasonable that iPads would be on this list. But this raises other questions: what will I be allowed to do with my device? Can I play a game, listen to music, or watch a video? Hopefully this will become clear when the group releases its report in July.

Google Launches TV White Spaces Trial In South Africa

Google-logo1Google's first trial to use the unused channels in the broadcast TV spectrum to provide wireless broadband access launched in 2010 in Logan, Ohio. Since then, Google has shown a lot of interest in this topic and today it is launching its second trial. This time it is in Cape Town, South Africa, where Google partnered with a number of local organizations to connect 10 schools to the new wireless broadband network. The idea behind the trial, Google says, is "to show that broadband can be offered over white spaces without interfering with licensed spectrum holders."

What's the Weirdest/Most Bizarre Wikipedia Page You've Ever Found?

Given the right state of mind, enough time on your hands, and a can-do attitude, your casual Wikipedia browsing can quickly devolve into bizarre, horrifying, and very likely entirely fabricated black holes of information. Dark corners and seedy underbellies abound, making it virtually impossible to find all of the site's most unsettling stores of knowledge. Knowledge, for example, like this, or this, or even this. New build out of Beginnings Infant and Toddler Care Center at the ...

Brandon and Paul Terkeltaub.

Brandon and Paul Terkeltaub.

Beginnings is the Simon Family JCC?s full day program for babies six weeks through 2? years. Its youngest charges (six weeks?approximately 16 months old) have recently moved to a new, more spacious area to accommodate more babies and anticipated demand. Thanks to a generous donation and a talented muralist, Beginnings Infant and Toddler Care Center is everything a parent would want for their little one.

Brandon Terkeltaub wanted to make a gift to the Simon Family JCC through the Tidewater Jewish Foundation. He chose Beginnings because he was a ?lifer? at the JCC himself. ?I grew up at the JCC in Norfolk,? says the recent ODU graduate. ?I went to JCC preschool and spent my summers at JCC camp.? It made sense to help build something for the very young at the Simon Family JCC, in the hopes that children grow and thrive at the JCC as he did he says.

As luck would have it, Terkeltaub?s employer matched his gift, which funded the complete build out of Beginnings this winter. There are hundreds of employers who will match employee?s monetary gifts to charitable organizations. The Tidewater Jewish Foundation encourages employees to ask their company about matching policies. ?TJF can easily facilitate these gifts, as we did with Mr. Terkeltaub,? says Shelby Tudor, donor services manager of the Tidewater Jewish Foundation. ?The process is simple, and the donor then has a vehicle in place to process subsequent gifts.?

In their new location, babies are separated by partitions into pre-crawlers, or ?wee ones? and crawlers or ?wobblers.? In the quiet sleep rooms, children nap in personalized cribs, soothed by the sound of white noise generators, and comforted with pictures of each baby?s parents. Little ones are provided with their own cubby as well as all new and clean equipment, diaper changing area, strollers, and toys.

?It?s been a great change for us,? says Tracie Guy-Decker, director of marketing and communications at the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and the Simon Family JCC, and mother of Ruthie, an 11-month-old at Beginnings. ?Ruthie sleeps much better because the new sleep room is quieter. When she sleeps better here, her sleep patterns improve, and she sleeps better at night, too.?

Brightening the walls of the Infant Care area are delightful murals by Catherine Shearon, who painted faux finishes and murals in California full time, participating in art shows, designing galleries and decorating her own home with her wall creations. Since moving to Virginia as a military spouse, she has rented and can?t paint murals in her own house. ?I was itching to do a mural for the JCC,? she says the mother of two young girls. Shearon donated her time to paint murals of beach scenes in the JCC babysitting area last year, to the delight of the members and staff.

Shearon was asked to use her talents again to create murals in the Infant Care space. Baby animals and Noah?s Ark now greet babies and parents each day, with colors and images that make children of all ages smile.

?My kids and I are always here,? says Shearon, who coaches a K-2nd grade basketball team at the JCC. ?When we?re not in basketball, we take Brickheadz and swim classes, and I work out in the fitness center. I love the JCC, so when I heard the new Infant Care room needed brightening up, I knew I could help.?

If you haven?t stopped by Beginnings lately, a quick peek is in order. Call Becky Feld 321-2332 or email bfeld@simonfamilyj.org for a tour. The center is open from 7:30 am?6 pm Monday through Friday.

'Evolutionary glitch' possible cause of childhood ear infections

Mar. 21, 2013 ? Researchers at King's College London have uncovered how the human ear is formed, giving clues as to why children are susceptible to infections such as glue ear.

The work was funded by the UK Medical Research Council and published today in the journal Science.

It is estimated that one in five children around the age of two will be affected by glue ear, a build-up of fluid in the middle ear chamber. This part of the ear contains three tiny bones that carry sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. When fluid builds up in the chamber, this prevents the three bones from moving freely so they cannot pass sound vibrations to the inner ear, causing temporary hearing loss. Until now, little was known about why some children appear much more prone than others to developing chronic ear problems, with repeated bouts of glue ear.

Carrying out studies in mice, scientists have discovered the cells that line the middle ear cavity originate from two different tissue types -- 'endoderm' and 'neural crest' cells. The part of the lining that originates from the endoderm is covered in a lawn of cilia (hairs) that help to clear debris from the ear, but the lining derived from neural crest cells do not have cilia. This makes that part of the middle ear less efficient at cleaning itself, leaving it susceptible to infection.

Interestingly, the process of the middle ear transforming into an air-filled space during development appears to be different in birds and reptiles, which have just one little ear bone. Mammals may have evolved this new mechanism for creating an air-filled space to house the additional bones. This indicates that the process of two distinct cell types to create the lining of the middle ear cavity may be linked to the evolution of the three tiny sound-conducting bones.

Dr Abigail Tucker from the Department of Craniofacial Development at King's College London's Dental Institute, said: "Our study has uncovered a new mechanism for how the middle ear develops, identifying a possible reason for why it is prone to infection. The process of neural crest cells making up part of the middle ear appears fundamentally flawed as these cells are not capable of clearing the ear effectively. While this process may have evolved in order to create space in the ear for the three little bones essential for hearing, the same process has left mammals prone to infection -- it's an evolutionary glitch.

"These findings are contrary to everything we thought we knew about the development of the ear -- in all the textbooks it describes that the lining of the middle ear is made of endodermal cells and formed from an extension of another part of the middle ear -- the Eustachian tube. The textbooks will need to be re-written!"

Report: Jobs Picture for Veterans Improved in 2012

The jobs picture for the nation's veterans improved significantly last year, particularly for those who have served since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Labor Department said Wednesday.

The annual report from the Bureau of Labor Statics shows that the unemployment rate for the latest generation of veterans fell from 12. 1 in 2011 to 9.9 percent last year. About a third of the people who make up that category of veterans served in Iraq or Afghanistan, or both.

The Labor Department report reinforces that, as a whole, veterans actually have an easier time finding work than nonveterans. The unemployment rate stood at 7 percent last year for all veterans, compared to 7.9 percent for nonveterans, according to the report.

However, the nation's youngest veterans are the exception to that longstanding trend. They continue to have a harder time finding work than their nonveteran peers, and nearly 1 in 5 was unemployed.

The federal government and private sector are participating in several initiatives placing greater emphasis on hiring veterans. Congress approved tax credits for companies that hire veterans and also required the military to provide transition training to those leaving the service. Many companies announced efforts to hire more vets in the past two years.

The report also points to possible difficulties for veterans if federal, state and local governments undertake furloughs, or possibly job cuts, to deal with budget trims. One third of veterans with a service-connected disability work in the public sector, as do nearly a quarter of the Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans.

By comparison, only about 14 percent of nonveterans work in the public sector.

The report also indicated that while the unemployment picture brightened for male veterans, there was little change among female veterans.

The unemployment rate for female veterans stood at 8.3 percent compared to 7.7 percent among their nonveteran counterparts, the report stated.

Canonical cuts support for non-LTS versions of Ubuntu, users now get nine months of bug fixes

Until now, people who downloaded non-LTS (long-term support) versions of Ubuntu were treated to a lengthy support period -- a full 18 months. Now, though, Ubuntu's technical board is shortening that support window to nine months, in the hopes that Canonical can assign its engineers to other projects. (If you look at the board's meeting notes at the link below, the group also agrees that most bugs get fixed within nine months anyway.) If you're wondering how this might affect you, the new policy applies to version 13.04, along with all future non-LTS releases.

Separately, the board decided that it will switch to a rolling release model, in which users won't have to do a full system upgrade to take advantage of major OS updates. Many of the particulars there are still up in the air, though, which is a shame because this has already been a hot topic of conversation in the Ubuntu community, and quite a few folks are likely to be curious. In any case, for those of you who want to know more, we recommend checking out those meeting notes to soak up as much detail as you can.

DreamWorks looks to Stone Age for new hit with "The Croods"

By Piya Sinha-Roy and Lisa Richwine

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After mining the worlds of fairy tales, zoos, dragons and martial arts pandas, DreamWorks Animation is going back to the Stone Age with "The Croods," in the hope of finding a new box office hit.

"The Croods," out in U.S. movie theaters on Friday, is being watched closely by analysts after the weak performance of "Rise of the Guardians" last year, which led DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc to write down about $87 million in costs.

"The Croods" follows a family of cavemen as they fight for survival in a mysterious and visually stunning new world that is constantly changing under their feet.

Croods patriarch Grug (voiced by Nicolas Cage) has to come to terms with daughter Eep (Emma Stone) growing older and falling in love with the more evolved Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who poses the threat of change for stubborn Grug.

"It's not the meteors or lava or mammoths falling through cracks in the ground. It's his daughter changing in front of his eyes and leaving with a man that she sees eye-to-eye with, and that we saw as really resonating with people," said Kirk De Micco, who co-directed "The Croods" with Chris Sanders.

DreamWorks has enjoyed huge success with its "Shrek," "Madagascar," and "Kung Fu Panda" franchises.

However, financial losses from last year's "Guardians," a movie that united Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and other childhood icons, didn't draw in big crowds and contributed to a decision to lay off 350 employees, DreamWorks said last month.

Sanders joked that they felt "no pressure at all" ahead of the release of "The Croods," saying that DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg had been supportive.

"One of the nice things that Jeffrey brings to the party is he never loses sight that we're making a feature film ... he'll never try to change the course of the film," Sanders told Reuters.

Box office forecasters project a bright weekend debut for "Croods" of $38 million and $45 million in the U.S. and Canada.

"I think if they are doing $40 million, people are pretty comfortable," said analyst Barton Crockett, who follows DreamWorks at Lazard Capital Markets.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD

De Micco and Sanders set about creating a vivid 3-D backdrop of the changing prehistoric landscape, with exotic mythical creatures, drawing inspiration from the Cretaceous era in Earth's evolutionary history.

"We wanted the audience to go on the very same journey that the characters are going on. At every turn, no one, including in the audience, knows what's going to be around that next corner, so it kept everyone on their toes," Sanders said.

A furry sloth named Belt, voiced by Sanders, is a scene-stealer with his prophetic "duh-duh-dun" phrase at tense moments. Sanders said his character provides "terrific comedy relief."

Sanders and De Micco worked with animators to create 39 original animals for the film. Twenty-one will be featured in the move and all 39 appear in a "Croods" video game released by Angry Birds creators Rovio last week.

If it hits projections, the film's opening will fall between "Guardians" limp $24 million first weekend and June blockbuster "Madagascar 3" that debuted with $60 million.

Film distributor 20th Century Fox, a division of News Corp., expects weekend sales to hit $40 million, with solid business in the following weeks as schools take a break around the Easter holiday.

"We are the first animated film (this year) in quite some time, and then we will be the only animated film for quite some time. We are going to play and play and play," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for Fox.

Off the Shelf: What we're Reading: From Educational Theory to the ...

Usually in this column we profile a staff or faculty member of the UK Libraries. For this month?s column we decided to interview a different kind of library employee, a Graduate Assistant and student in the School of Library and Information Science. Debbi Lloyd, a Graduate Assistant in the Reference Department, met with me recently to share her most recent and current reads plus a bit about her favorite genres. We had a great conversation covering a wide variety of books.

Debbi has an undergraduate degree from Spalding University in Louisville in Interdisciplinary Humanities, a degree that focused on art, creative writing, and philosophy. She is currently in her second year of Library School here at UK. She would like to work in an academic library one day.

Our diverse book discussion began with the book Debbi was currently reading for her EDC 608 class. The class is Instruction Design 2 and she is taking the class as a cognate for her MLS. The book is Hamlet?s Blackberry: a Practical Philosophy for Building a Good Life in the Digital Age by William Powers. It focuses on the balance between technology and how it decreases our depth in relationships and thinking. Debbi explained how the author uses his own personal stories and compares it to difference philosophers. She felt that the book really makes you reflect on your own technology uses and your reliance (or dependence) on technology. Debbi thought it was a very good book, very thought-provoking, and she would recommend it to anyone looking for that ?technology/life balance.? In addition to our discussion on various philosophies and the part technology plays in education on many different levels, we also discussed the various fiction works Debbi enjoys for pleasure reading. Debbi prefers mysteries and paranormal stories in her free time, although she will occasionally read a biography or?memoir-type book?as long as it is funny. In the biography/memoir?area, Debbi mentioned two books that she has read recently that she enjoyed. One was Are You Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling (who you might remember from past seasons of ?The Office?) and the second was Let?s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson (the title and the Shakespearean, taxidermy mouse on the front cover are plenty to peak my interest!). But much more to Debbi?s liking are the fiction books she enjoys. Primarily mystery stories (Agatha Christie is a favorite and she is looking forward to rereading the complete Sherlock Holmes) and what she fondly calls the ?paranormal crap? fiction. She is particularly attracted to the contemporary or urban fantasy, often where you have a culture within the one we?re all familiar with (think Harry Potter as one example). Debbi recently finished reading Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia which fits perfectly into this ?world within a world? type of fantasy. The story is about a young girl, Lena Duchannes, whose boyfriend discovers that she is a witch and has no control over what kind of powers, good or evil, she will get when she comes of age. The book explores Lena?s angst over her unknown fate and her inability to choose her own powers. The story is told from the point of view of her boyfriend, Ethan Wate, a boy who is not part of this secret world. A movie based on the book recently came out as well and Debbi has already seen it, twice even! This is exactly the kind of stuff that Debbi enjoys the most. Debbi has two books on her to-read list that both exemplify the type of books she enjoys the most. GoneGirl by Gillian Flynn is a crime mystery and Horns by Joe Hill is another mystery with a paranormal element. In addition, Debbi regularly goes in and downloads all the free top 100 Kindle books in the paranormal category. So she has lots of things on her reading list! It?s always interesting to ask an avid reader about their favorite books and those they disliked. Debbi pointed immediately to the book The Drifters by James Michener as her favorite book. The book takes place during the time of the Vietnam War and is about a group of young adults in their late-teens and twenties traveling in Europe. They each have different stories and reason for their travels; they don?t know each other and encounter each other throughout their travels as the story unfolds. Debbi feels that she read this book at the right time in her life and it really spoke to her. She regularly recommends it to students traveling to Europe. ?Another favorite is the Percy Jackson series of books by Rick Riordan as well as his newer series, the Kane Chronicles. She has been reading these with her niece and she finds them very empowering books for young kids, especially those who struggle with dyslexia or ADHD. On the other end of the spectrum, she is not a fan of post-apocalyptic stories, like the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and The Passage by Justin Cronin. Debbi said that it?isn't?often that she?doesn't?finish a book (even if she has to force herself), but The Odyssey is one she has never managed to finish.

I really enjoyed the conversation Debbi and I had about these various books. Have you read any of these? Are any of these books ones you now want to put on your ?to read? list? Do you have any questions for Debbi? Let us know in the comments below.

Integration opportunity for Vietnam's university education ...

(VEN) ? With a source of young skilled workforce and human resources, Vietnam has a good opportunity to innovate, develop and integrate into the global university education through innovative efforts and cooperation and coordination in higher education and training operations, especially in high-tech specialties.

In the past few years, Vietnam?s university education system has been developing very rapidly. In the 2001-2011 period, the number of university students increased steadily by nine percent. On average, eight universities and 12 junior colleges were established every year. The ratio of students on 10,000 people increased from 162 in 2001 to 251 in 2011. During the period, especially since 2005 Vietnam?s university education carried out many reforms such as implementation of new teaching programs and international cooperation programs and application of the credit training. Many support policies to boost university education programs were also implemented. For example, the State granted pilot financial self-control schemes to universities and provided them with financial aid to undertake scientific researches.

Master of Arts Nguyen Huu Son from the Saigon University said Vietnam?s university education has accessed the world?s latest and most advanced scientific knowledge. Many universities have also been able to coordinate with famous international universities and received many supports and financial aids from financial institutions and non-governmental organizations through a series of educational projects and some scientific and technological forms. Therefore, Vietnam needs to take measures to grasp this opportunity to develop and integrate into the world?s university education.

Doctor Tran Hai Linh from Biological Technique Department of Inha University said Vietnam has a large number of overseas Vietnamese, many of those are scientists and researchers. They can act as an effective bridge for educational and training cooperation between Vietnamese and foreign universities. Besides, Vietnamese universities themselves have also acted on their own initiative in their education alliance, cooperation and student exchange programs with high-rank universities all over the world. These education alliance programs have been highly appreciated and recognized by the magazine Times Higher Education World University Ranking. Vietnamese universities have also boosted cooperation in doing scientific research with the US, Australia, European countries and Taiwan?s territory.

A good example is the Center for International Education (CIE) of Ho Chi Minh City National University which has successfully maintained the cooperation of a network of nearly 20 universities from the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Also, Vietnamese German University also had education alliance with the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and the Technical University of Berlin to launch advanced training programs in specialties such as Global Production Management or Computer Techniques. They all target to improve the quality of Vietnam?s university education and build a high quality workforce to serve the country?s industrialization.

The chance for Vietnam?s university education development and integration is more real as the World Bank approved a total of US$150 million to help Vietnam sustain the implementation of the Higher Education Reforms Agenda, and to raise school readiness for five year old children.

Accordingly, US$50 million under the Higher Education Development Policy Operations 3 will be used to support the implementation of policies designed to strengthen governance, financing and quality of higher education by: improving the responsiveness of higher education and research and increase the quantitative capacity of the system; enhancing fiscal transparency, sustainability and effectiveness of the higher education sector; and improving the quality of Higher Education institutions.

In a working session with the Board of Directors of Vietnamese German University, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan stressed that to develop university education, apart from encouraging students, universities need to stick to the human resources demand in Vietnam and point out that students after graduating would be offered to do suitable jobs. They should establish a Social Relation Department to introduce themselves, respond and clear up queries of students and Vietnamese and foreign enterprises operating in Vietnam. In the long term, social benefits such as accommodation, number of inhabitant and other administrative procedures need to be ensured to teams of lecturers and science researchers to facilitate their works.

Dr Jurgen Mallon, the President of Vietnamese German University affirmed that to develop Higher Education in general, including his university, policies in terms of tuition fees and scholarships should be adopted to attract students. In addition, personal income tax of foreign professors and lecturers should also be reduced so that they could work and contribute for a long time in Vietnam.

Educational experts also stated that to help Vietnam?s university education integrate into the world system, Vietnam needs to step by step increase values of its certificates and qualifications in conformity with international standards. It also needs to make reforms in organizing, managing and operating universities; improve capability and specialism of lecturers; put new achievements into practice to develop science and technology in education and evaluate and verify education and training quality according to international standards./.
