There are at least a few reasons:?Google, definitely not Facebook's BFF, recently completed the purchase of Motorola Mobility; and ahead of Facebook's recent?IPO, the company acknowledged that mobile is a key area in which it needs to grow, with more and more?Facebook users accessing the site via mobile than on computers. And right now, the social network has not pushed advertising ??its key revenue source ? onto mobile. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg contends that will change,?saying recently that transforming its mobile and advertising experience are top priorities in 2012. ? ??

"We don't comment on rumor and speculation," said a Facebook spokeswoman when asked for comment by msnbc.com about the Facebook phone. But, she added, "Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."

Of additional interest: Facebook is also looking at buying Opera, the mobile Web browser prized for its efficiency. 21st century bloodletting reduces cardiovascular risk

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? It seems that while the practice of bloodletting throughout history had little or no effect on most diseases, and the practice was abandoned in the 19th century, new research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine demonstrates that blood donation has real benefits for obese people with metabolic syndrome. Two sessions of bloodletting were enough to improve blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular disease.

Metabolic syndrome is the name given to a host of difficulties affecting people who are obese. This includes insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and hypertension and leads to an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Since it is known that accumulation of iron in the body is also associated with hypertension and diabetes researchers from Berlin and University Duisburg-Essen randomly assigned patients with metabolic syndrome into two groups, those undergoing iron reduction by phlebotomy and controls.

The iron-reduction patients had 300ml of blood removed at the start of the trial and between 250 and 500ml removed four weeks later. Six weeks later, allowing plenty of time for blood volume to be replaced, the patients who gave blood had a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (from 148 mmHg to 130 mmHg) as well as reduction in blood glucose levels and heart rate, and an improvement in cholesterol levels (LDL/HDL ratio).

Prof Andreas Michalsen from the Charit?-University Medical Centre, Berlin, who led this research explained, "Consecutive reduction in iron stores was able to improve markers of cardiovascular risk and glycemic control. Consequently blood donation may prevent not just diabetes but also cardiovascular disease for the obese. Obviously this treatment will not be suitable for people with anemia however for those eligible for treatment blood donation may prevent escalation of their condition."

Sit in a comfortable, relaxed position that will allow you to be open (without crossed arms and legs) and receptive. Avoiding distracting movements such as playing with your hair, your eyeglasses, jewelry you may be wearing, etc. signals to the other person that you are actually paying attention to them and listening.

Maintain soft, non-judgmental eye contact. This creates openness and also stimulates oxytocin, which is a hormone/neurotransmitter that produces feelings of trust and love.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The CIA is remembering those lost in the hidden, often dangerous world of espionage, adding a new star to the intelligence agency's memorial wall and more than a dozen names to its hallowed Book of Honor.

The new star carved into the wall is for Jeffrey Patneau, a young officer killed in a car crash in Yemen in September 2008.

"Jeff proved that he had boundless talent, courage and innovativeness to offer to our country in its fight against terrorism," said CIA Director David Petraeus at a private ceremony at CIA headquarters this past week.

Petraeus' tribute was the first public identification of Patneau. The stars on the memorial wall at headquarters in Langley, Va., bear no names.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, was the site of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors. Patneau was part of the fight against militants in the country in a tense year in which the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa was attacked.

With the addition of the star for Patneau, the wall now commemorates the lives of 103 Americans who died in service of the CIA, "never for acclaim, always for country," Petraeus said at the annual event attended by hundreds of employees and family members of those lost. The rememberance came just days ahead of Memorial Day, when the nation remembers its military veterans and those who died in war.

The addition of 15 names to the CIA's Book of Honor means family members can openly acknowledge where their loved ones worked when they died.

Leslianne Shedd was lost when hijackers forced down her plane over the Indian Ocean, killing more than 125 people.

"Everybody who was on the plane with her who survived said she was not at all scared," her sister, Corinne Collie, told The Associated Press on Saturday. "She was saying it's all going to be okay, holding the hand of the person sitting next to her."

Collie says the agency approached her family a year ago, saying it was now possible to acknowledge her death ? likely meaning the cases she had worked on had been wrapped up, or staff she worked with had either retired or were no longer in harm's way. Collie said being able to share what her sister did has been a relief.

"To lose a sister and not be able to talk about the full picture of who she was has been hard," said Collie of Tacoma, Wash.

"The biggest relief is my parents ... get to acknowledge and brag about her, especially my dad," she said.

Like Shedd, most of those honored were killed in the clandestine war on terrorism, the list reading like a grim roll call of terrorist acts of the last three decades. Matthew Gannon was among the victims of the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Molly Hardy was killed in the August 1998 suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. She urged others to take cover as she was hit by the blast from an al-Qaida car bomb.

Jacqueline Van Landingham was killed in a terrorist attack in Pakistan in 1995. The CIA did not disclose how she died.

CIA officers face constant threat in Pakistan, hunting and hunted by the Taliban and al-Qaida. They often play a cat-and-mouse game with Pakistan's intelligence service, sometimes able to work with them and sometimes forced to work around them to gather intelligence on al-Qaida's militant diaspora. U.S. officials say it gets support from elements of the Pakistani government.

Five of those remembered were victims of the April 1983 suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people.

Among the CIA officers lost was Phyliss Nancy Faraci, "one of the last four Americans evacuated from the Mekong Delta when Saigon fell" during the Vietnam War, according to CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz. Faraci had volunteered to work in war-torn Beirut.

Deborah Hixon, a young officer fluent in French who volunteered for a temporary posting there, also died in the attack. Frank Johnston was a 25-year agency veteran who had accepted the assignment though he was close to retirement.

Paramilitary officer James Lewis, who had joined the CIA after his military career, and his wife, Monique Lewis, also were killed. Lewis was "only hours into her first day as an Agency officer when the bomber struck," Ebitz said.

Leica M9-P

The Leica M9-P ($7,995 list, body only) is a beautiful camera with an absurdly high sticker price. Its lack of bells and whistles will confound casual snapshooters, but its an appealing choice for seasoned photographers who fell in love with rangefinder film cameras and want a digital equivalent. If you're looking for a camera that supports autofocus, video recording, and offers a library of zoom lenses, the M9-P is not for you. But if a compact camera with a large image sensor, bright optical viewfinder, and minimalist controls is what you're after, the M9-P may be what you're looking for?the only question is whether you can afford it. This high-end interchangeable lens camera doesn't offer the mass market appeal or flexibility of our Editors' Choice Olympus OM-D E-M5 ($1,299.99, 5 stars), but if you're set on a new digital rangefinder, your choices are all Leica.

Why Choose a Rangefinder Camera?
If you've never shot with a rangefinder, you must first understand that there are some fundamental differences that set the camera apart from an SLR. When you look through the optical viewfinder of an SLR, you're seeing exactly what the lens sees. This has its advantages?you get an accurate view of your frame and can preview the depth of field of your shot. With a rangefinder, two sets of framelines, which change along with the lens, are displayed in the viewfinder to give you an idea of what your frame will capture, but you'll want to keep shots a bit loose with the intention of cropping, as they aren't entirely accurate. You'll also see a bright rectangle in the middle of the finder with a double image?that's how you focus. As you adjust the focus on the lens barrel, the double image turns into one. Once you've mastered this technique, it's quicker than manually focusing an SLR, but obviously lags behind the best D-SLRs in terms of speed and precision.

So, why put up with the convoluted focusing and framing system? For one, the finder is always bright?regardless of whether you're using an f/0.95 lens or an f/4 lens. Depending on how wide your lens is, you'll also be able to see outside of the frame. This is ideal for shooting on the street where pedestrians may wander into a shot unexpectedly, or for tracking action. There's also no finder blackout when you take a photo?so you'll see the exact moment that you're capturing as you hear the shutter click. There aren't a lot of other digital cameras on the market that offer this?the Fujifilm X-Pro1 ($1,699 list) comes closest. It doesn't offer the manual focus rangefinder patch so you'll have to trust its autofocus when shooting with its hybrid digital/optical viewfinder in optical mode.

The other advantage is lens design. Because there's no mirror or focus motors, rangefinder lenses are amazingly small?especially when you consider that they provide full frame coverage. The rear element can be very close to the film plane, which makes it possible to design wide-angle lenses that are incredibly compact. The Leica Elmarit 28mm f/2.8 ASPH lens has a 2-inch diamater and is just 1.2 inches long, much smaller than any 28mm SLR lens of similar speed.

The short span between the lens mount and film plane also reduces the distance that light has to travel before it is captured, resulting in images that are much sharper around the edges and in the corners than those from SLRs. The M9-P has a series of microprisms built into the sensor that further help to increase corner performance, as digital sensors require light to hit the photosites straight on in order to be properly recorded?this isn't required when shooting film. The sensor also omits an antialias filter, which makes sharper photos possible. Along with the X-Pro1 and Nikon D800E ($3,299.95), it's one of the few cameras on the market that takes this approach to sensor design.

If you discover that shooting with a rangefinder is for you, your choice of camera bodies is limited?they're niche products at this point. Leica currently produces two other models. The M9 ($6,995 list) is essentially the same camera with slightly different styling and without a protective sapphire glass cover over its LCD. The recently announced M-Monochrom ($7,995 list) is basically an M9 that shoots only black-and-white photos. You can also look for an M8, M8.2, or Epson R-D1 (2 stars) on the used market. The 10-megapixel M8 and M8.2 will handle much like the M9, although the image sensor in those cameras is smaller than full frame, so your lenses will suffer from a 1.33x crop factor, and you'll need to use special UV/IR filters on your lenses to prevent unwanted color shifts when shooting certain fabrics and vegetation. The RD-1 is a 6-megapixel camera and uses a 1.5x APS-C crop sensor, the same size that is found in consumer D-SLRs, and is unique in that it is a digital camera that requires you to manually advance the shutter after taking a photo, just as you would with a film camera.

Juniper Invests in Video Conferencing Startup Vidyo ? Techno Capital

Juniper Networks? investment in video conferencing company Vidyo represents the latest move by a networking vendor to add video capabilities to its portfolio.

Vidyo officials announced May 22 that Juniper, through its Junos Innovation Fund, was investing in the company, and that the plan is to integrate Vidyo?s video collaboration technology with Juniper?s product lineup. Juniper?s investment was announced as part of Vidyo?s Series D round of funding, though company officials did not say how much Juniper is investing.

Vidyo over the past few years has raised $97 million, and officials said in September that the company had raised $22.5 million as part of its Series D round.

Cisco Systems and Polycom are the top vendors in a video conferencing market that analysts expect will continue to grow as businesses look for ways to improve employee productivity, enhance collaboration with workers, partners and customers, and reduce operating expenses, including travel costs. The increased mobility of the workforce is also driving the need for greater video capabilities across multiple devices, including laptops, smartphones and tablets. Analysts with market research firm IDC are predicting that the worldwide enterprise video conferencing market, which hit $2.7 billion last year, will grow to $3.2 billion in 2012.

The market also has become increasingly competitive, with Cisco and Polycom being pressed by smaller rivals looking to offer more cost-effective alternatives that offer the same performance capabilities.

In addition, networking and unified communications (UC) vendors also are looking to add video capabilities to their product lineups, either through in-house development, partnerships or acquisitions. For example, Avaya in March announced plans to buy Radvision, a video conferencing company that had fallen on hard times since partner Cisco bought rival Tandberg for $3.3 billion in 2010.

Alcatel-Lucent in July 2011 rolled out its own offering, the Visual Collaboration suite, a combination of home-grown technology and partnerships.

Juniper itself in 2010 announced a partnership with Polycom, but little appeared to come out of that alliance. Now the networking company is turning to Vidyo.

?As the use of video in the enterprise and on end devices continues to expand, our customers are seeking new ways to improve video delivery,? Jeff Lipton, vice president of venture and strategic investments at Juniper, said in a statement. ?Vidyo is an emerging player that is driving innovation in software-based videoconferencing, and we believe its leading technology will improve the experience and economics of video communications alongside advances in networking technologies.?

Vidyo has seen significant growth over the past year. The 225-employee company in April announced 82 percent growth in billings over the previous year, which came at a time when both Cisco and Polycom saw disappointing first-quarter numbers for their video collaboration businesses. Vidyo officials said the company has more than 1,850 customers, not only in the enterprise, but also in health care, education and government.

The company offers a software-based solution that includes the VidyoRouter platform that brings video conferencing to multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and telepresence systems. Vidyo introduced a virtualized version of VidyoRouter in March. Last year, the company unveiled Vidyo Panorama, which officials said brings high-quality video conferencing at a much lower cost than room-based systems from Cisco and Polycom.

Shareholders sue Facebook, NYSE comes calling

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The fallout from Facebook Inc's messy initial public offering widened on Wednesday as shareholders sued the social network and its bankers while a trading firm revealed a massive loss on the shares and threatened to seek "remedies."

The Nasdaq stock exchange also came under further pressure as a source close to the situation told Reuters that NYSE Euronext had opened discussions with Facebook about a potential stock listing there. Nasdaq also faces litigation from angry investors.

Facebook's listing, envisioned as a crowning moment for an eight-year-old company that has become a business and cultural phenomenon, has instead turned into a legal and public relations fiasco for the company and its lead underwriter, Morgan Stanley.

Serious trading glitches interfered with the stock's opening on Friday, and subsequent revelations by Reuters that analysts had quietly reduced their revenue forecasts prior to the IPO have led to accusations of selective disclosure of material information. The shares closed at $32 on Wednesday, 15 percent below the IPO price.

A lawsuit filed on Wednesday seeking class-action status alleged that defendants -- including Facebook, its Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co -- concealed "a severe and pronounced reduction" in revenue growth forecasts resulting from greater use of Facebook's app or website through mobile devices.

It also accused Facebook of telling its bank underwriters to "materially lower" their forecasts for the company. The lawsuit said the underwriters disclosed the lowered forecasts to "preferred" investors only.

"The main underwriters in the middle of the roadshow reduced their estimates and didn't tell everyone," said Samuel Rudman, a partner at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, which brought the lawsuit. The firm is among the leading securities class actions firms in the country.

"I don't think any investor in Facebook wouldn't have wanted to know that information."

Andrew Noyes, a Facebook spokesman, said: "We believe the lawsuit is without merit and will defend ourselves vigorously."

Morgan Stanley had no comment. It said on Tuesday that Facebook IPO procedures complied with all applicable regulations and were the same as in any initial offering.

Also on Wednesday, Knight Capital Group Inc said its second-quarter results will be hurt by losses related to numerous issues during the listing. The firm, which provides electronic trading services to brokers and retail clients, foresees a pre-tax loss of $30 million to $35 million related to the IPO.

The company has submitted claims for financial compensation from Nasdaq OMX and is considering all legal remedies available, Knight Capital said in a regulatory filing.

Knight Capital's announcement may be a sign of things to come as other traders and investors tally up losses from the trading problems.

Nasdaq OMX was also sued on Tuesday by an investor who claimed the exchange operator was negligent in handling orders for Facebook shares. Morgan Stanley said it is reviewing Facebook trades and would adjust prices for some retail customers who overpaid.

A source familiar with the situation told Reuters that NYSE Euronext had opened discussions with Facebook about a potential stock listing there, and that the social networking giant was considering its options.

The largest U.S. exchange later denied it was discussing a full listing transfer with the company, which became the first U.S. company to debut with a market value of over $100 billion.

IPO INVESTIGATIONS

Wednesday's lawsuit, one of several that have been filed around the country, was brought in New York on behalf of Dennis Palkon and Brian Roffe, who said they respectively bought 1,800 and 200 Facebook shares at the IPO price, and Jacob Salzmann, who said he paid more than $123,000 on May 18 for 2,961 shares at an average $41.77 each.

Research analysts at several underwriters lowered their forecasts for Facebook after the Menlo Park, California-based company in a May 9 prospectus cautioned investors about the possible impact of users shifting to mobile platforms. Facebook currently makes little revenue from mobile ads.

Citing people with direct knowledge of the matter, Reuters reported this week that, during its IPO road show, Facebook advised analysts for its underwriters to reduce their profit and revenue forecasts.

The lawsuit named underwriters Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Bank of America Corp as having cut their forecasts after the May 9 prospectus was filed, but that these cuts were not publicly revealed before the IPO. [ID:nL4E8GM8SK][ID:nL1E8GN0FT]

The plaintiff-shareholders called the disclosures of Facebook's business risks inadequate, saying that analysts knew more about these risks and cut their business outlooks accordingly -- for the benefit of only some investors, not all.

"If Facebook told analysts to materially lower their forecasts, it should have told the entire market," said Antony Page, a professor at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. "We need to know what exactly was said to the analysts, and determine how different Facebook's public story was from its private story."

Regulators including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, and Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin are now looking into how the IPO was handled. The U.S. Senate Banking Committee is also reviewing the matter.

"If Facebook faced a known and particularly salient risk, boilerplate language would be insufficient," said Elizabeth Nowicki, an associate professor at Tulane University Law School and a former SEC lawyer.

Bank of America and Barclays Plc are also defendants in the New York case, as are Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman and several Facebook directors.

Bank of America spokesman Bill Halldin, Barclays spokesman Mark Lane and Goldman spokesman Michael DuVally declined to comment. JPMorgan did not respond to requests for a comment.
